Inside an iconic mid-century home designed by Steven Harris Architects, Palm Springs Residence is a study in restraint, honouring both the existing structure and the work of those who came before. This sensitive renovation reimagines the original house, known as Charney House, designed by Donald Wexler in 1956. “Wexler was brilliant, with an extraordinary sense of syntax and grammar; everything lines up with everything,” says Steven Harris, partner at Steven Harris Architects.

Interestingly, Harris and his partner bought the house accidentally. “We were helping another friend with their house and fell in love with the place,” recalls Harris. After spending time inside an iconic mid-century home designed by Wexler, Harris’s vision was rooted in preserving as much of the original as possible. “Almost everything here is original to the house,” he notes. “For me, the greatest liability would be for someone to drive by on the street and immediately say, ‘oh! that's a Steven Harris house.’”

Alterations inside the iconic mid-century home designed by Wexler were largely stylistic and inspired by a Wassily Kandinsky painting. “If you look at it from the air, you will see flashes and curves and various shapes, which on one hand is quite graphic, and on the other, almost every view is perspectival because the things you’re looking at are only oblique. Things shift off of each other in a very curious and interesting way.”

Stepping inside an iconic mid-century home designed by Wexler, the front door is indicated by a covered passage, flanked by an oblique terrazzo sidewalk extending from the driveway. “When you come into the house, your first view is straight out to the golf course. I will never get over looking across a swimming pool to a golf course, to palm trees, to mountains,” reflects Harris. The house itself has a minimalist layout, featuring a bedroom, a living room and a dining room located diagonally to the living space. The kitchen is tucked behind a wooden wall, which separates it from the dining area.

Steven Harris Architects positions the home in relation to its site and how people live. “These houses were all generated by an idea of lifestyle. They were intended that people have dinner parties outside by the pool … and the public rooms all very much engage the landscape,” explains Harris. With expansive spaces for gatherings and cocktail parties, he adds, “this is a California house; I can't image it being in many other places. There is a kind of spareness about all of it. There is a sense of openness and lightness about it.”

After spending time inside an iconic mid-century home designed by Wexler, it’s clear how powerful preservation can be. “I’m very proud that I didn't feel any need to author it. I think too often we find ourselves wanting to create something that is profoundly individual,” says Harris. “Hopefully, architecture can, to some degree, resist commodification … it is something that for a very long time will resonate and have the ability to represent and convey ideas.”

The P1 hypercar transformed McLaren Automotive from fledgling upstart into full-blown Ferrari and Porsche rival. From there it went on a roll, subsequently giving us the 675LT and then the 720S, two vehicles that remain supercar benchmarks.

Now, there’s a follow-up to the P1. A true successor when other halo McLarens since – like the Senna, Elva and Speedtail – have been in a different vein.

It’s called the W1, that latter number signifying a legacy to the P1, and further back to the iconic F1. Big shoes to fill then…

And yet, at a glance, the W1 doesn’t seem that different from the P1. At a time when Ferrari has halved the number of cylinders and doubled the number of driven wheels in the new LaFerrari-succeeding F80, the W1 is still powered by a hybrid twin-turbo V8 with power going to the rear only.

But, that does mean the W1 has more engine capacity and cylinders (in the guise of an all-new 4.0-litre V8) than the Italian, and the front wheels remain uncorrupted. It’s 75hp up on the Ferrari, too…

Inspired by structures found near New Zealand’s Southern Alps, The Shepherd’s Hut is the worlds most secret home. The minimalist house – designed by Fearon Hay in collaboration with interior designer Paul Kennedy – sits comfortably in the landscape while offering a flexible set of interiors.

Settled on the Wānaka lakefront, the worlds most secret home is often in the path of cold wind crossing from Makarora. “When there are storms, you can feel very alone, but with the warmth of the fires, my two dogs rugged up with sheepskin, you essentially become a shepherd,” says Matt Chapman, custodian of the property. “When we created the home, I didn't want too much space for an abundance of possessions. I’d reached a point in my life where minimalism and simplicity were the ways I wanted to exist.” While maintaining a minimalist focus, the design brief for the project proposed a spatially flexible home that enables new experiences.

“When we encountered the site, it was an opportunity to build a structure with length,” says Tim Hay, architect at Fearon Hay. “We liked the idea of a very simple silhouette … we wanted the building to have a sense of retreat and integration with the landscape.” Echoing the simplicity of the form is a restrained material palette including coated metal, timber, concrete and wool. The pared-back structure and materiality allow focus to remain on the powerful experience of the site, which changes according to the seasons.

In the worlds most secret home, spaces are enclosed by retractable walls and decorated with modular furniture. Though the architecture is dynamic, the floor plan clearly delineates six built modules including, at each end of the home, a minimalist bedroom accompanied by a bathroom and living room. To declutter the sleeping areas, Fearon Hay ensures that the living rooms contain generous storage. These rooms then lead to a central living space, lounge and double-sided kitchen. Outside the worlds most secret home, there are structures dedicated to washing, linen and more storage. There is also a bunk room, above which is a timber deck with a view of Lake Wānaka.

A sense of playfulness is fostered throughout the worlds most secret home. In addition to the retractable walls and double-sided kitchen, the bunk room is designed to indicate childlike joy and effortless connection. “The fabric is all very colourful, which brings in the element of surprise when you get here,” says Kennedy. “They're reminiscent of the sunrise here that you get and the sunset, so they're all colours that you do see when you're in this property.” The design also responds to the mess that an active outdoor lifestyle can bring. “You should be able to feel relaxed when you come in here, put your feet up,” says Kennedy. “If you've been out hiking all day, you're not afraid to bring in a bit of dirt, a bit of mud.”

Capturing the essence of a modern day shepherd’s hut, the home champions a simple, joyous way of living. By adapting architecture and orchestrating spaces, Fearon Hay creates a residence to which residents can retreat and live in harmony with the landscape.

In Bridging Boyd, a 1950s home is transformed through its connection to the garden. While reversing the changes brought on by multiple renovations, Jolson reconnects the house to both the natural surrounds and the simplicity of its original design.

Located in the Melbourne suburb of Toorak, Bridging Boyd sits on a dry riverbed in a densely wooded area. Robin Boyd’s original design used geometric forms to establish a simple building in dialogue with the surrounds. Having analysed the house, Jolson acknowledges that a 1950s home is transformed through its connection to the garden. “My favourite part of the original home is the way Boyd chose to engage with the landscape,” says Stephen Jolson, principal architect at Jolson. “The bridge has created this exceptional design solution where you feel suspended in the landscape, and I think it is such a simple yet powerful gesture that has lasted the test of time.”

The house has been altered many times since it was first built. One such renovation took place in the 1980s and the changes amounted to a project that did not reflect Boyd’s vision. “The bridge itself was basically characterised by a series of informal and formal living spaces, and living spaces seemed to get wedged into corners of the space, and it really blocked this ability to connect seamlessly to the landscape,” says Jolson. As a result, the new design brief centred on the idea that a 1950s home is transformed through its connection to the garden. The brief involved creating an open-plan home with a strong relationship to the surrounds.

In the kitchen, a series of panelled walls can be pulled from inside a cavity to create a screen between the cooking area and main dining space. Elsewhere, the subtle dividing elements consist of a fireplace and bar. Materials are then layered across zones to create a single aesthetic expression, such as where structural pieces smoothly transition to soft timber detailing. In the bridge, natural oak floors combine with steel, which complements the hand-worked steel of fireplaces and kitchen bench details. Nonetheless, a 1950s home is transformed through its connection to the garden and the outdoor aspect of Bridging Boyd is paid great attention.

“Boyd's original design included a very large terrace that enabled its inhabitants to actually engage with the outside landscape,” says Jolson. “Over the years, with the number of renovations, the ability to engage successfully with outdoor space was actually limited and only available through a very small terrace.” In the knowledge that a 1950s home is transformed through its connection to the garden, Jolson adds a large circular terrace just off the family room. Echoing the bridge, the terrace is immersed in the natural setting, enabling residents to experience the surrounds in the manner originally intended.

Embodying the belief that a 1950s home is transformed through its connection to the garden, Bridging Boyd champions forms that offer a time-tested response to site. By complementing and continuing the work of Robin Boyd, Jolson creates a light-filled home well suited to family life.

A designers dream home, Gable Park forms strong bonds between the house, garden and local area. Crafted by Weaver+Co Architects, the minimal home uses soft tones and natural materials to celebrate the suburb.

Set on a leafy street in Yarraville, a western suburb of Melbourne on the traditional lands of the Bunurong people, Gable Park is a designers dream home that enhances the friendly reputation of the neighbourhood. Blending the visual thresholds of the house and front garden with the street and public park located opposite, the project surpasses adjacent works in its active embrace of the surrounds. “When you look around, many front gardens are disconnected from the street,” says Martin Weaver, director at Weaver+Co Architects, “whereas in this case, there was an opportunity to activate it, use it and connect it to the rest of the house.” The entry, offset to one side, overlaps with the driveway and the enclosed front garden is carefully designed to harmonise with the park.

Upon entering the designers dream house, residents find a double-height void, fine steel staircase and large skylight. Across the home, the subtle interior design sees light and space emphasised; while the hallway ceiling is lowered, the ceiling in the living area is raised, creating a sense of compression and great release as residents move from one space to the next. To similar effect, the kitchen is visually modest and spatially intimate. In addition to showcasing the size of the home, the high ceiling in the living area blocks external views of the interior.

“Most people, when they come into the house, they automatically go to the front lounge, which is dual sided with a central garden on one side and the front garden and park on the other,” says Weaver. The front of the designers dream home also features a verandah protected by dynamic timber screens to foster an indoor-outdoor experience. Conversely, the rear of the house is occupied by the primary bedroom as well as a series of sliding doors, revealing a study and ensuite. In the latter space, a skylight allows parts of the design to be naturally highlighted during the day.

“The clients came to us with a pretty clear brief, which was that they wanted a very practical home for their family of five with a very minimal interior, soft tones, lots of natural materials and plenty of storage,” says Weaver. The materiality of the designers dream home achieves the desired visual and tactile elements while linking to the clients’ broader aims. “The owners of the house really wanted their house to blend in with the neighbourhood, and we chose locally handmade bricks, weatherboard and simple zincalume roofing for the outside,” says Weaver. Every externally used material reflects a classic local build. Internally, Victorian ash softens the look of spaces on the first floor.

Embracing the suburban context, Gable Park inspires residents to enjoy views that extend beyond spatial boundaries. Weaver+Co Architects champions minimalism to deliver not only a highly functional house but a tranquil site.

Prime by Samantha Mink is a masterclass in minimalist, nature-focused design, created to embody both sophistication and serenity. Not one but two new Porsche 911 GT3s are upon us, both a regular be-winged car and the more subtle Touring model. And for once, the headline news isn’t the power, the peak revs or the Nürburgring lap time, but how practical it is.

That’s right, because for the first time in the 25-year history of the GT3, it’s being offered with back seats. It’s only for the Touring, but that addition alone will be enough to start The Internet chattering about whether this is ‘all the car you’ll ever need’.

However, if kids, or at least taking your kids with you, isn’t your thing, then worry not. The back seats are merely an option, and the non-Touring GT3 can’t be had with them at all. Plus, if you’re the sort of Porsche purest who hates weight, you can double down on that ethos with either a Weissach pack for the GT3 or a Leichtbau (aka Lightweight) pack for the Touring.

Yukari House is a Japanese-inspired home in nature that develops relationships between residents, their home and the surrounding environment. While reimagining an existing structure, Tanev Muir Architects emphasises the day-to-day rituals that determine the character of a space.

Located at the end of a leafy street in Byron Bay, the Japanese-inspired home in nature adjoins the Arakwal National Park. “The park feels ancient when you look at it; it’s full of life and birds and wallabies pass through. It is a very special place and it requires a reflective space,” says Laura Muirhead, architect at Tanev Muir Architects. The design firm encourages reflection by crafting nuanced rooms that allow residents to linger in the moments between activities. “The philosophy of the project balances between shadow and light,” says Peter Tanevski, architect at Tanev Muir Architects. “It can’t easily be characterised as a space that is modernist, open plan and has nowhere to hide, and at the same time it can’t be characterised as being cavernous.”

Expressing a measured approach to interiors, Yukari House is a Japanese-inspired home in nature that comprises a series of rooms both connected and partitioned using joinery. “Rather than open or closed, on or off, we wanted the joinery and the partitions in Yukari House to have a constantly active state,” says Tanevski. In the main living area, the television is concealed inside a timber cabinet with a sliding door, highlighting the movement between conditions as a valuable part of life. Elsewhere, an automated composite glazing system – in which a blind can drop to mitigate heat in summer – features internal timber reveals.

“The kitchen was the most important aspect to our client,” says Muirhead. “We moved the kitchen to the centre of the home; this was integral to its new role housing a space for collaboration, coming together and cooking shared meals.” To enable the clients to face their guests while cooking, a fine, spotted gum table is slotted directly into a monolithic stone island. Positioned in the centre of the space at bar level, the table not only accommodates seated dinners but allows the greatest number of people to circulate the kitchen-dining area.

Throughout the Japanese-inspired home in nature, considered materials and forms are used to enhance spatial function. In the reconfigured bathroom, a modest, rectangular bathtub contributes to a calming environment that speaks to the Japanese concept of bathing. In Japan, completing the bathing ritual can achieve both physical cleanliness and spiritual rejuvenation, and to this end, the Yukari House bathroom is serene. A semi-extruded, stainless-steel basin evoking the image of Kiyomasa’s Well reinforces the Japanese character of the space. Outside, a circular bathtub echoes the curves found in nature and, with a view of the treetops, offers a more open bathing experience.

“I think Australian architecture is changing from a quantitative space – where we talk about the amount of things that are in a house – and we’re shifting to a dialogue which celebrates the qualities and emotional capacity of architecture and space,” says Tanevski of the Japanese-inspired home in nature. “I hope this house is part of that lasting legacy and is a contributor to that change.”

There’s no getting away from the fact the new BMW M5 is a bit of a porker. The previous-generation super-saloon weighed 1895kg; this new one is 540kg more…

Blame the plug-in, hybridised V8, which delivers more power (up 140bhp) and torque (up 184lb ft) than the last M5, and a parsimonious 160mpg+ on the WLTP fuel test. And while figures like those probably looked enticing when BMW started development years ago, enthusiasts aren’t exactly lapping up electrified performance cars in 2024…

But, but, but… this is also an all-new BMW M5! It’s the stuff of legend, with a long legacy of always being top dog over and above rivals from Audi and Mercedes. And while there’s yet to be a new AMG version of the E-class, and Audi will soon end production of the RS6 and RS7, the M5 is here, and with a stonkingly powerful V8 too. Downsizing is not in effect!

Connected to both the natural and suburban environments, Perch House is a dream home built to provide dramatic views and private interiors. Embodying the philosophy of pH+ Architects on a unique site, the home celebrates indoor-outdoor living.

Located in the residential suburb of Castlecrag, Perch House is a dream home built to reflect the local context. The layout of the suburb is designed to follow the contours of the land and thus promotes a respectful approach to the natural surrounds. “The site is really special … it’s really dramatic topography,” says Drew Hamilton, co-founder of PH+ Architects. “Midway through the site, there's a 10-metre sandstone cliff that cuts east-west. Below that you have the Castlecrag northern escarpment, which is pretty wild bushland and that runs all the way down to the water about 80 metres below.” The historic garden suburb is visible to the south and mediates the two contrasting areas.

pH+ Architects elevates the dream home built to capture the best views by adding a northern terrace that cantilevers four metres over the cliff. The main living space is then oriented towards the escarpment. On the other side of the home, a series of ramps offer step-free access to the roof terrace while defining a buffer zone between the house and public domain. “We then have elected to veil that buffer zone with a floating Corten screen,” says Hamilton. “This is made up of a series of fins; each one is configured individually to strike an appropriate balance between privacy for the residence and engagement with the streetscape.” Set across three sides of the house, the screen also frames northern views.

Inside the home, a dramatic hallway is naturally lit using clerestory glazing. At the end of the hallway sits the main living space running from the front of the house to the back, capturing views to both the north and south. Upstairs, a bespoke office, primary bedroom and ensuite look out to the escarpment, while the lower level includes a garage, wine-storage room, laundry room and three bedrooms. Two of the bedrooms are north-facing; the other is a tranquil space facing the buffer zone. Outside, the swimming pool projects from underneath the cantilever, offering water-to-water views.

To encourage indoor-outdoor living, pH+ Architects crafts a dream home built to foster a sense of spatial continuity. Glazing and flush thresholds dissolve the visual boundaries between spaces while materials continue from the outside of the home into the interiors. In addition to planting, exposed concrete and sandstone are consistent elements of the project that relate to the outdoors. “The house is really all about allowing the client to celebrate and enjoy this dramatic sight,” says Hamilton. “So the detailing feeds into that, where it's clean, calm, decluttered – basically not drawing attention to itself deliberately – to try and leave enough space to focus the attention to the exterior wherever possible.”

Following the example of the layout of Castlecrag, pH+ Architects ensures that the design of Perch House is sympathetic to the natural landscape. The residence is a dream home built to sit comfortably between escarpment and suburb, allowing residents to enjoy the remarkable location.

Looking inside a garden house that embraces the subtropical environment of Brisbane, Gibbon Street Residence offers a balance of interior and natural spaces. Designed by Cavill Architects, the renovated home harmonises with the natural landscape while adding to the neighbourhood greenery.

Inside a garden house located in the inner-city suburb of New Farm, the existing built surrounds are reflected. “The strong history of Italian family settlement in the area was something that we really wanted to celebrate in this project,” says Sandy Cavill, director at Cavill Architects. “We looked at the charming way in which those houses have been renovated and built – the materiality, their language – and it was that history and culture that really led to the conception of the ideas behind this project.” Emerging from an existing workers’ cottage, the house includes a modern extension that fits in the context of local design. Layers of off-form concrete and wet dash render echo the foundations of neighbouring builds; used throughout the project, the wet dash render also merges interior and garden spaces.

“When we first visited this site, one of its key attributes was really a legacy of landscape,” says Cavill. “The rear of houses on this street, collectively they contribute quite a large green space.” Cavill Architects takes care to maximise floor space inside a garden house without disturbing nature. Greenery is set on top of the rear extension and the resculpted site features a dry creek bed, continuing the work of the natural watercourse. The levels of the house are then conceived as a series of platforms relating to the surrounds. “There's a bridge-like structure, a sitting room, which hovers over the undulating landscape, and then the main living space sits at the bottom of the dry creek bed,” says Cavill. “So really, the gardens have been threaded throughout the ground floor of the building and the living spaces always look to sit alongside gardens and courtyards.”

As other homes sit close to the sides of Gibbon Street Residence, Cavill Architects uses the top and bottom of the house to illuminate inside a garden house. “We've got a number of skylights and a void to the courtyard, which bring light deep into the plan, and also windows at the floor, which focus on the garden without compromising the privacy of the interior,” says Cavill. The relationship between the home and the neighbourhood is developed and managed through the rooftop garden. A variety of plant species are positioned close to the edge of the roof so that, spilling over the side, they not only protect the interior below from outside view but also provide a pleasant green visual for neighbours to enjoy.

From inside a garden house to its rooftop, Gibbon Street Residence testifies to the considered approach of Cavill Architects. “A key ambition of our office in all of its projects, whether they be large and public or small and private, is to consider a certain civic mindedness,” says Cavill. “That was really at the core of the focus of this project and we're so pleased that the community enjoys it from within its context.”

This – deep breath – is the new Ferrari F80. The successor to LaFerrari. And by extension, a halo Ferrari supercar with a lineage that stretches back from LaFerrari, through Enzo, F50 and F40, to 288 GTO. No pressure, then…

It’s a once-a-decade occurrence, the LaFerrari having been revealed way back in 2013. That car was Ferrari’s first hybrid, with the electrically boosted V12 powertrain pumping 963hp to the rear wheels. Eleven years on, there’s more electrical assistance, more power, more driven wheels, much more aero, but fewer cylinders…

Designed as a tree house and woven into the landscape of California’s Martis Valley – within striking distance of Lake Tahoe – is Analog House, jointly designed by Olson Kundig and Faulkner Architects. Due to its location and the nature of its form, the home seamlessly echoes its alpine surroundings and becomes part of the forest floor through conversational design. Situated in a dense forest, the architecture was conceived to be environmentally sensitive. The glass doors and exterior rainscreen are made of recycled steel and the wood frame employs engineered wood studs, joists and rafters. The structure’s steel skin also requires no maintenance and is fire-resistant. As such, the architects not only created a dwelling that nestles into the surrounds but one that greatly considers and responds to the environment.

As seen in the house tour, there is a harmony in the home’s design; it offers seamless transitions from room to room, showcasing the transformed spaces both inside and out. Designed as a tree house, the pièce de résistance of the dwelling is the steel tower – a three-storey structure that rises from the main volume. Designed as a guest wing, it comprises bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms and a rooftop deck with sweeping views. In the main volume of the house lies the kitchen and utility areas, with moveable glass doors that open up to the outdoor spaces and allow for plenty of fresh air to enter the abode. From here, the house tour leads to a concrete pavilion, which houses the living room and, further along, the primary bedroom and study.

Enhancing the transformation of the home is the material choices throughout. The design team took cues from the landscape, weaving the structure around existing pine trees and using the clearings to establish habitable ground. The result is a series of perpendicular cement, steel and glass volumes that afford panoramas at every angle and blur the line between nest and nature. Interactive moments also feature throughout the dwelling. For example, the custom fireplace between the kitchen and porch, which can be converted into an Argentinian grill using a hand-cranked mechanism. Offering a seamless connection to the surrounds, Analog House by Olson Kundig and Faulkner Architects is designed as a tree house that serves as nature’s nearest neighbour.

It's finally here: Elon Musk has revealed his long-awaited autonomous Tesla Robotaxi – also referred to as the Cybercab – at an event in Los Angeles, USA.

Looking a lot like the VW XL1 (remember that?) the Robotaxi has no steering wheel or pedals and just two seats. As the name suggests, its crisp flat surfaces and full-width light bars have more than a passing resemblance to the Cybertruck, too.

This, then, is Musk's vision of a grand autonomous future, and he promises the Robotaxi will be in full production by 2026, with prices starting from $30,000.

A fleet of 20 fully functioning prototypes were built to run around the Warner Bros. Studio lot – the venue for Musk’s big reveal – and take passengers on short, obstacle-laden routes. Top Gear duly hailed one, so join our Editor-in-Chief, Jack Rix, for a first ride in the new Tesla Robotaxi…

Addressing the issue of connection deficit in vertical living, Upper House fosters a sense of community among residents. Crafted by Koichi Takada Architects on behalf of developer Aria, the ultimate penthouse and spacious apartment building proposes a new, healthier way of inhabiting a city.

Set in South Brisbane, known widely as a social and cultural hub, Upper House sits close to art galleries, theatres, bars and cafes. The project takes cues from the suburb, inviting people to come together: while the building offers 1000 square metres of communal amenities, it also embodies a work of art and features the ultimate penthouse. Michael Hurley, development director at Aria, describes the design as “a series of dancing balconies” with timber ribbon running up the facade and a triple-height timber rooftop. “[The design] just screamed out and said ‘world-class, never-been-done-before’. It was curvy, it was organic, it was unique, and it was Aria” he says.

At the base of Upper House, a large podium displays work by Indigenous artist Judy Watson. The piece recognises the Turrbal people as the traditional owners and custodians of the land on which the project is built. Beyond the podium, the facade is inspired by Moreton Bay fig trees – what can be viewed as ribbons are timber ‘roots’ framing the main structure and the ultimate penthouse. Curling around the edges of the roof, the bold details form a pergola and shading device that protect the open wellness retreat. “[With this design] we can bring people together to challenge and address what we call ‘connection deficit,’ but also reconnect with this garden space that appears on top of the building and celebrate biodiversity,” says Koichi Takada, principal at Koichi Takada Architects. "When you come out to the residential amenity, the wellness retreat, you're coming out to this infinity pool and it's really breathtaking.” If residents fix their gaze on the pool as well as the city panorama in the background, the amenity appears to float serenely in the air. With its allusions to roots and tree canopies, the space also celebrates the subtropical climate of South Brisbane.

“The interiors are neutral and timeless,” says Georgia Wilson, director at Koichi Takada Architects, “and they really slow you down from the fast-paced environment that we're used to living in.” A rational floor plan of the ultimate penthouse includes high ceilings, full-height windows and skylights to create a tranquil and light-filled environment. In addition, a restrained decorative palette of natural materials allows residents to personalise each space. “The timber flooring and joinery are consistent in colour to really bring in the ambience of the outside,” says Wilson. “It's a building that breathes and allows you to slow down and breathe with it.”

With city views, organic forms and natural materials, the ultimate penthouse and apartment building enables effortless appreciation of the South Brisbane context. Balancing a sense of the urban and organic, Koichi Takada Architects and Aria created healthy living spaces in which residents can easily connect to one another.

Sited on a mountain in Bel Air with views of the Los Angeles Basin, Strata House by KOVAC is a stunning example of a home transformed. The architecture and interior design are defined by various layers, or strata, which encompass a battered stone base, a modernist glass-walled pavilion and the most recent addition – a contemporary, Shou Sugi Ban charred timber volume.

“We like to call it Strata House because it reflects something coming out of the ground and transforming through the ages,” says architect Thomas Schneider. The site, which is indeed multifaceted, has a storied past – Hollywood actress Zsa Zsa Gabor lived in the original 1950s structure before it was destroyed by a fire in 1961, and the modernist pavilion was designed and built by prominent Canadian architect, John B. Parkin in 1968.

KOVAC’s response was grounded in uniting these varied stylistic influences and celebrating the architecture’s lineage in creating a home transformed. “It was a bit tired, but it had this pavilion space, which was really the iconic piece. So, early on, we said we wanted to embrace it and work with it,” says architect Michael Kovac.

At the base, the stone plinth appears to burrow into the side of the mountain. The top level contains the more private areas including bedrooms, a home office and a library, realised in calming, neutral palettes demonstrated in the house tour.

The central, reimagined modernist pavilion contains most of the shared living spaces with a screening room, a bar and the kitchen and dining areas. Generous apertures frame views of the surrounding mature oaks and reinforce the home’s connection to the landscape, which is populated by native deer. These openings also create dynamic shadow play across the day.

At the rear, the living room is supremely inviting. Realised in sparkling silver and grey-blue tones reflecting the Los Angeles skyline. Replete with a large, sunken lounge, it is the jewel of this home transformed. Floor-to-ceiling glazing on all sides ensures unobstructed views of the surrounding hillside and the city below, and a large outdoor terrace allows for indoor-outdoor living in keeping with California’s clime.

Though confident in their nuances, these built strata are inextricably linked, and the interior design and decor are integral to the cohesion of this home transformed. Inspired by 1970s Hollywood glamour and mid-century culture, there’s vintage furniture by Pierre Paulin, Eileen Gray and Olivier Mourgue alongside luscious shag rugs and a Sputnik pendant. Materials like timber wall panelling with curved motifs, gold-veined Sahara noir marble, bold colours and indoor plants drive this decor concept home. Schneider says, “the Mad Men aesthetic was an important influence to pull from to create spaces that can function both in the daytime as a family home but that transform into this rich, lustrous, nighttime feel.”

Not only is this curation fitting for the project’s heritage, but it reflects the clients’ affinity for modernist architecture with a cinematic edge. Thankfully, these influences are tempered just so by KOVAC’s modern sensibility, making for a true home transformed that champions its Californian context in more ways than one.

The Robinson Residence was initially built for the first black physician hired at the Los Angeles County General Hospital and his wife, Doris Robinson, a prominent writer and TV/Radio Host. The Architect was said to have been a Black Architect; however, the original plans have only the initials “T.D” which is something that isn’t too out of character for a time when Black Architects had to study under white Architects and sometimes even had to hide behind the names of white architects to practice, We have since moved on from this style of practice, but we wonder how often and how much this happened.

The current owners of the Robinson Residence, Marc and Catherine, are history buffs and have completely fallen in love with the story of the home. They are doing everything they can to share its story and preserve its history. When they purchased the house, there were several things they had to do to bring it up to city code, which would have been a bit easier if they had taken away some of the characteristics that were initially built. Still, they wanted to preserve the legacy of the home. Today, it is one of the only modernist homes in a neighborhood primarily overrun by historic Craftsman.

Looking inside a hidden countryside home that is grounded in a strong connection to its environs brings you to Copperstone, the latest addition to The Range Estates collection of properties offering luxury stays around Australia. Set on 19 pristine hectares in Bangalow, 15 minutes inland from Byron Bay on the NSW North Coast, Copperstone is the perfect alternative to an Airbnb or off-grid accommodation.

Working with Sam Ray of Story Design Collective, Tom and Emma Lane of The Range Estates built a homestead whose architecture is part Spanish-style hacienda and part Australian homestead. The sprawling estate offers accommodation for those seeking a comfortable yet luxurious holiday, celebrating the bucolic surrounds and offering high-end amenities including a tennis court, 25-metre mineral pool, indoor cinema and entertainers’ dream kitchen complete with wood-fired oven.

Stepping inside a hidden countryside home is always a memorable experience. For this relaxing escape, the experience of entering the estate is equivalent to an unveiling. The initial design vision was for an integrated space that felt like a home but also offered an equine experience to guests. “It is a beautiful, generous farmhouse in what is perfect horse country, so I had this idea that the stables would be a little bit European and Argentinian,” says Emma. When inside a hidden countryside home, you want to feel connected to the landscape: Copperstone beautifully integrates the design of the stables with the house, so that the experience of country living and a sense of deep relaxation are perfectly intertwined.

Stepping inside the hidden countryside home, one is immediately met by bold arches and carefully curated decor that includes an antique mirror from France and two Italian wall sconces. “I think it sets the tone for the rest of the house, which is this beautiful blend of modern meeting old,” notes Emma. The main living area houses a fireplace, kitchen and an expansive dining room with a table made of Australian hardwood, a material theme that is echoed throughout the whole house, from the timber floors to the timber windows. The main bedroom is its own oasis, with a fireplace, high ceilings and a monastic ensuite with striking pinky-orange travertine from Italy. There is also a guest wing with four bedrooms. Outside, guests can stroll through the walled Tuscan-style garden and along walking trails, or indulge at the wellness retreat.

As you would expect inside a hidden countryside home, the interiors favour materials and decor that juxtapose modernism with old-world class. Found items pepper the rooms, complemented by refined finishes and statement furniture. “It’s got that element of luxe, but it’s so relaxed and comfortable,” says Tom. Materials, where possible, have been sourced from the surrounding environment, including timber and clay. “My ethos when it comes to the building was to try and work with the natural environment, visually, but also metaphysically and physically,” says Emma. “What a lovely way to exist in symmetry with the beautiful place we live in.”

Sean Brunson and his wife Geri are no strangers to home remodels, but embarking on the journey of building a brand-new home from scratch was an entirely different experience. The couple, deeply inspired by the sleek and timeless designs of Modernist architects from the 1950s and 60s, found an ideal location to bring their dream home to life. This project was not just about constructing a house, but about creating a space that reflects their shared love for design and architecture.

In the spirit of hands-on creativity, Sean and Geri decided to take on several aspects of the construction themselves. Each room is a showcase of incredible design, yet the space feels inviting and lived-in, not just a display of aesthetics but a true home. This thoughtful blending of elements from the past with modern-day comforts creates an environment that is as visually stunning as it is comfortable, embodying the very essence of what Sean and Geri envisioned for their dream home.

A minimalist apartment offering panoramic views of Melbourne, Aerial balances a sense of openness with that of comfort and intimacy. Crafted by Nexus Designs, the home uses subtle shifts in colour and materiality to propose “shades of experience” in the context of a minimalist apartment.

Set on the traditional lands of the Boonwurrung people of the Kulin Nation, Aerial is a minimalist apartment overlooking parklands, the Botanic Garden precinct and the Melbourne CBD. From the outset, the home presents as a luxurious retreat, beginning with the lobby. Neutral tones and subdued lighting accentuate both the fine texture of interior finishes and the contours of a dramatic artwork – echoing the line of the horizon, the artwork is a sign of the vista to come. “Something we [the interior designers] inherited is that when you enter the apartment, your first view out to the extraordinary skyline is through a bathroom,” says Sonia Simpfendorfer, director at Nexus Designs. “That's something that we wouldn't normally do, but we fully embraced it.” Compared with the lobby, the bathroom celebrates a lighter version of a neutral colour palette, highlighting the generous size of the space.

In the primary bedroom, neutral tones allow focus to remain on sweeping views to the east. The restful character of the space is developed using understated artwork and furniture. Separated from the bedroom by a wall, the largest section of a minimalist apartment is divided into zones. In Aerial, the zones consist of the dining area, main seating group and library. “We created a threshold so you enter it [the library] through a timber-lined corridor and when you're in there, the materials are quite different,” says Simpfendorfer. While most of the core interiors feature soft greys, gentle blues and muted greens – subtle references to the cityscape – the library captures a rich colour palette, the warmth of which is enhanced by timber-clad walls. All spaces are visually united by wide oak flooring and woven rugs of a similar colour.

Using Blum motion technology, Nexus Designs ensures that the practical element of Aerial’s experience is infused with luxury. The solutions, well-suited to a minimalist apartment, allow items throughout the home to be opened effortlessly and closed silently. “We've worked with Blum for a long time and starting a project with them is always our preference,” says Simpfendorfer. “This kitchen was designed very specifically for this client and for this brief. As soon as we knew the shape of it, we gave the plans to Tommy from Blum and he mocked up the kitchen for us at one-to-one scale in their test-drive kitchen. It just took all of the guesswork and any uncertainty out of the equation for our client.”

A minimalist apartment near the Melbourne CBD, Aerial provides a place to retreat from the bustle of the city. “We've given this apartment a whole new life and purpose for our client,” says Simpfendorfer. “It's their home, it's their haven, it's the place they miss when they're away.” Through the considered use of colour, Nexus Designs achieves a tranquil vantage point and effortless living environment.

Fairhaven Beach House captures rough and sprawling forms which, shaping the spatial surrounds, offer a journey of discovery. Inside a breathtaking coastal home seamlessly merging with nature, Wardle follows a process akin to scenography, crafting a home that dramatically presents its ocean views.

Set high above the Great Ocean Road, inside a breathtaking coastal home seamlessly merging with nature, the local surf beach on the western coast of Victoria is enjoyed by inhabitants. The design brief required relating the home to its site, adjusting the architecture so it settles into the land and endures the stresses of the local climate. From the edge of the beach house to its main living area, Wardle fosters a sense of drama. To enter the home, residents must first follow a narrow path – “almost like a fissure between rocks,” says Wardle – before passing through a bespoke front door.

Inside a breathtaking coastal home seamlessly merging with nature, a canyon-like entryway highlights the home’s verticality, limiting views of nature before residents reach the main living area. The space then widens to reveal a vast panorama. “We often describe it [the inside of the home] almost like a cinematic projection where at each stage you see other layers of view and it opens up only when you arrive at this living space,” says Wardle. “We've broken it up into a series of spaces within each [zone] that then inflect slightly toward a different part of the ocean view. As you leave one space and walk to another, there's a different aspect of the view toward the ocean to be experienced.”

In the north-facing kitchen, a large window can be slid back to activate the courtyard space. “At the same time,” says Wardle, “it [the kitchen] is oriented back toward this one long projection of the view, out to the ocean through the dining area.” A staircase just off the entryway leads up to most of the bedrooms, while a glass bridge links the ground floor to the terrace and study. The study is the only space set away from the ocean, instead facing lush treetops to the north of the home.

Inside a breathtaking coastal home seamlessly merging with nature, coastal Blackbutt timber features across the floors, walls, windows, ceiling and joinery. “It's the singularity of this beautiful Australian eucalypt that I think is one of the primary considerations of our material selection,” says Wardle. Some windows and ventilation panels are hidden by timber so that new sightlines can be opened in a way that does not affect major viewing windows. In contrast to most of the furniture, the dining table is made of solid Victorian Ash. The piece celebrates the ceremony of dining with place settings incised into its surface and an inset tray and bowl.

“It's great to come back to a house that we've done several years ago now,” says Wardle. “It's settling into the landscape … it's amazing timber structure and zinc-clad exterior are combating the elements as well as we could have hoped.” Expansive and sculptural, inside a breathtaking coastal home seamlessly merging with nature, a bold design directive responds to context, championing not only unique spatial setups but also a theatrical approach to design.

An experienced interior designer, architect and developer visit Stonelea for a house tour, each sharing how to transform and personalise this dream mountain home. An awe-inspiring house nestled in the luscious foothills of Mount Cooroy in the Noosa Hinterland, the home is now on the market.

This property is a premium real estate and land offering set amid a tranquil Queensland mountain landscape, not far from the beach. The property features a stunning house, garden and expansive acreage, with great potential for renovation or development. The home was built many years ago and homeowners Phillipa and Mark have enjoyed being residents for over ten years. “Words really can't describe it, it's so special,” recalls Phillipa. Mark adds, “It is tied into the mountain like no home we’ve ever seen – it feels like it belongs here.”

Interior designer at We Are Triibe Jessica d’Abadie explains how to transform and personalise this dream mountain home through considered interior design choices, materials and decor. “Upon first impressions of this home, the proportions were really beautiful. I think it’s really important when looking at a home to pay attention to the bones of it, because that's probably the most important part of a home, as things like materials and furniture are things that can be easily adapted to suit your own personal style,” she says.

For example, d’Abadie explains how in the main living area, the high ceilings bring in light and make the space feel open. Another space she thinks has beautiful bones is the kitchen. “It is really big and has a really big island bench. If you wanted to change it, it’s something that’s easy to do.” She continues, “You could retain the existing bench tops and just change the cabinetry to a different colour, or alternatively you could change the countertop altogether to create a lighter scheme.” The kitchen is therefore a perfect example of working with the bones to apply your own signature style.

When considering how to transform and personalise this dream mountain home, another avenue may be through altering the existing architecture of the home. Architect at Furminger Architects, Christopher Furminger, shares how to transform and personalise this dream mountain home in ways that further integrate the home within the mountain and the view. Furminger explains the potential to open up the view to the north and continue out to the pool, as well as opening up the floorplate at the base and opening to the sky, bringing light from above. “This home does so many things well, but by further integrating it into the site and bringing the mountain itself into the home, there is an opportunity to create a timeless form.”

Similarly, a developer at Graya, Andrew Gray, shares his tips on how to transform and personalise this dream mountain home by adding additional value to the home. “Under the main house, there is already a lot of room for car parking, so if this was my place, I would convert the six-car garage into either a guesthouse or caretaker's accommodation,” he explains. “With the structure already there, the conversion process would be fairly simple and it still picks up the amazing views that the house gets.”

Lotus, always seemingly in a little financial trouble, hasn’t flourished under recent Geely ownership as its Chinese owners might have hoped. Deliveries of the Emira sports car were delayed; the Evija hypercar is yet to hit production; and the Eletre SUV and Emeya super-saloon have arrived just as the world is cooling on the idea of EVs.

This then, the Theory 1, is concept car to grab your attention when times are tough. The company’s next production car will be a second, smaller electric SUV (think Porsche Macan-sized) so the Theory 1 is a kind of reminder that people at Lotus are still thinking about what it means to be a Lotus, past just wearing the badge.

Thus the Theory 1 does everything from ushering in a new design language for Lotus, to showcasing a radical approach to production with just a handful of materials used for the bodywork.

It also introduces us to ‘Lotuswear’, which is an attempt to ‘evoke a sense of raw emotion and pure excitement’ when you’re behind the wheel of this 1000hp electric supercar. How does it work? With seats that can inflate on one side or the other and a steering yoke that can suddenly be ribbed, thanks to textile-based wearable robotics tech being applied to the automotive sector for the first time.

The perfect Porsche 911 doesn’t exist, right? And even if it did, how do you pick from the ever-increasing list of great rear-engined Porsches?

Are you a fan of the OG 2.7 RS? Or on the side of the 997-generation GT3 RS 4.0? What about the 911 R? That’s leaving aside all the race cars, too.

And then there’s this, the 911 S/T. Built by Porsche (in limited numbers) to celebrate its 60th birthday, it mixes GT3 RS oily bits with GT3 Touring discreetness to give us, effectively, a successor to the 911 R.

We already love it after driving it on the road (which is where it was designed to be) but can it stand up to being thrashed on track? First bought as an investment project, Casa Moderna is a dream home that now forms the primary residence of designer Olga Doykhen. Developing Spanish Colonial-style architecture through the considered use of traditional stone, Doykhen creates her ideal living environment.

Located in South Orange County, between Los Angeles and San Diego, Casa Moderna is just a five-minute walk from the harbour and beach. In response to the warm climate, the dream home champions Spanish Colonial-style architecture with white walls, red clay roof tiles and arches. “Unfortunately, a lot of houses in suburban areas use foam or fake architectural features,” says Doykhen, “but I was inspired by that and thought ‘Why not transition this house into a real Spanish Colonial-style house with real architectural features?’” The modern iteration of Casa Moderna is the only type in which vital stylistic elements are thoroughly integrated. In terms of function, the dream home offers places to rest, entertain visitors and focus on family.

On the edge of Casa Moderna, the fence has no gate; instead, the site entrance is marked by minimal Flos lights. Having first passed through a modest wooden door, residents enter the dream home through a glass front door integrated into a rotunda. Inside, a hallway leads to a dining room, butler’s pantry and kitchen. Pocket doors in the kitchen open to an alfresco dining area, fire pit and outdoor kitchen – adjacent is a cold plunge pool, outdoor shower and sauna. While the ground floor of Casa Moderna is mostly dedicated to communal areas – with the exception being an office – the first floor is split into two private bedroom wings. “One [wing] is my daughter's wing where her bedroom is located with her extra living room and a guest bedroom,” explains Doykhen. “Both bedrooms have their own bathroom.” The other wing comprises a primary suite joined to two closets and a primary bathroom.

“In this particular house, I used a lot of natural materials, a lot of timber, stone, wool, leather, as well as limewash on all of our bathrooms,” says Doykhen. Travertine supplied by Ollin Stone is employed across the first floor to reinforce the European character of the dream home. “Olga came to our team looking for authentic natural stone,” says Scott Foster, creative director at Ollin Stone. “We worked with her to find the most authentic Italian travertine for her to signify different rooms.” The resulting product is durable, vein-cut, silver crystal with contemporary expression. On the ground floor, ocean-silver-coloured stone visually unites the kitchen, outdoor kitchen and external water feature.

Some of the biggest challenges in creating Casa Moderna came from the fact that, on some of the many occasions when Doykhen fed ideas to her subcontractors, their answer was ‘No.’ “Those challenges, they made me a better designer,” says Doykhen, “[the challenges made me work] to communicate my ideas and to show the examples from Europe, how it's actually been made and, in the end, we actually succeeded.” The seamless application of natural stone across Casa Moderna solidifies not only its character, but also its status as an established family home.

Evidencing the tradition of innovative work in Wellington, Eastbourne House embodies a unique response to a difficult site. Crafted by Stevens Lawson Architects, the cliffside home presents as both a retreat and lookout.

Set on the eastern side of Wellington Harbour, Eastbourne House reinforces the unusual character of local homes which, responding to harsh weather and steep terrain, have earnt the reputation of architecture ‘on the edge.’ “The building needed to be built from the top down for site access, unlike most buildings which are built from the bottom up,” says Nicholas Stevens, co-design lead on the project. “As you can imagine, logistically this makes for a far more complex and time-consuming build.” With a solid foundation, rigid structure and multitude of curved edges, the cliffside home evokes the image of a large rock that has been shaped by the weather.

From the road, residents ascend a ramped driveway to reach an undercroft: “At that point you're confronted with an extraordinary artwork by the artist John Reynolds, which is a tribute to Wellington's wild weather and its condition of living on the edge,” says Stevens. Inside the cliffside home, a helical staircase winds from the foyer to the top of the home, passing the bedroom level. A striking display of black steelwork, the feature is complete with an elegant timber floor overlay. “We wanted to create a real experience of moving through the house, almost a choreography of space” says Stevens.

At the top of the stairs is a double-height space containing the main living area. The room is calm, equally uplifting and similar to an observation post, offering a clear view of the horizon. Sliding doors can be opened to blur the boundary between the living room and deck. “The terrace itself is an interesting space in its own right,” notes Stevens. “It's not one of those terraces which sort of hangs out in space and is exposed on all sides, it’s a little bit more cave-like.” Sheltered areas for cooking and dining encourage residents to enjoy the tranquil microclimate and spend time watching nature.

As well as frequent encounters with harsh wind, the cliffside home has the capacity to withstand strong vibrations, owed to its position on a fault line. Its durable exterior is created using black glazed terracotta tiles and black aluminium; visually, the materials recede into the darkness of the native bush. “The interior is in contrast to this [image]: light and airy,” says Stevens. Forté engineered oak flooring covers the living area, staircase, and hallways. On the terrace, Forté millboard decking is used as a sustainable alternative to hardwood. “We’re really impressed by the way the millboard decking can match the oak flooring inside. It’s warm, it’s textured, it’s prefinished … we think it really adds to the atmosphere of this house,” says Stevens.

A startling take on a cliffside home, Eastbourne Residence both protects from and embraces its lively natural context. Championing uniqueness, Stevens Lawson Architects establishes a fresh iteration of architecture ‘on the edge.’

It’s not often Top Gear’s Head of Car Testing has his head scrambled by a fast machine, but the Koenigsegg Jesko Attack is a very fast machine indeed.

A 1578bhp twin-turbo 5.0-litre V8 is partly to blame, and with carbonfibre keeping the weight down, not much blunts the performance either. Then there’s the downforce, up to 1400kg of it, which means the Jesko Attack is not merely fast in a straight line.

Clearly, we needed somewhere suitably proper to test such a car, and that place is our very own TG Test Track.

This then, is the £2.8m Koenigsegg Jesko Attack, unleashed in the (sweaty) hands of Top Gear’s Ollie Marriage…

This home’s design facilitates a rare co-habitation with the forested landscape and represents a balance of modern architecture and the purity of nature. From a distance, Edition Office’s Federal House appears like a shadow nestled into the folding hills of the hinterland, a sharp contrast to the vibrant surrounds.

Upon approach, the textures of the exterior convey a distinct dialogue with nature. This home’s design acts to deepen relationships between people and the natural setting and intimately shows the inner machinations of the environment.

The brief outlined a home that would act as a sanctuary and elemental respite from the clients’ high-pressure careers. The occupants of Federal House enjoy a relationship with the hillside, forest and grassland at the site’s rear as well as panoramic views over the forested horizon from the heavily inset living-zoned platform and sheltered pool. A reverberation of settler colonial homesteads of the past, this home’s design inverts the front verandah typology, looking inward to orbit an internal courtyard and present a tightly controlled outer envelope.

Federal House’s interior spaces act as an elevated stage, a refuge from which to observe the passing of time through the shifting weather and seasons of the Northern Rivers hinterland. The covered outdoor spaces welcome in the landscape, where modestly scaled living spaces and bedrooms lie. A large inner void draws the sky into the depths of the structure, and the pool reflects the solar and lunar cycles across its surface.

This home’s design is clearly delineated, with the living spaces placed to the north and south sides of the central garden to allow for social interactions, and the sleeping and bathing spaces situated within the eastern wing provide a series of modest enclaves for rest and solitude. The subterranean pool grounds the project and links to the planted void at the centre of the structure. Here, the water takes on profound meaning, connecting users directly to the natural elements.

Materials used amplify the experiential qualities of Federal House. Aaron Roberts, director at Edition Office, recalls visiting the site early in the design process, recounting, “we found ourselves drawn to the tree line, to the shadows cast and observed the horizon from a point sheltered from the direct sun.” This notion of observing nature in shadow inspired this home’s design, its darkened appearance, the gradient timber tones used to define functionality and gives insight into the studio’s mindful approach.

Federal House is a testament to the design prowess of Edition Office and its understanding of the nuances of environmental connections. “Watching the sun slowly rise, shift in its great arc across the sky and then sink back down behind the tree line is endlessly captivating from the home,” says Kim Bridgland, director at Edition Office. The courage to experiment has resulted in this home’s design – a unique residence in tune with its surroundings, with the harmonious merging of modern architecture with the purity of the location.

The ‘Vanquish’ name is back at Aston Martin, and someone clearly decided that simply body-kitting a DB12 and winding up the turbo boost wasn’t enough. Good call.

The new Vanquish is a very different machine: with an extra 80mm in the wheelbase purely for beauty’s sake, an 835hp bi-turbo V12 rubbing Ferrari’s nose in it, and a new carbon-skinned body that – for once – looks noticeably different to other Aston Martins in the range. Heck, you’re paying north of £300,000 for one of these. That’s the sort of bespoke treatment you expect.

An architect designs Rockbound to blend into the rocky landscape. Crafted by Omar Gandhi Architects, the home is architecturally dynamic – it isn’t just about one thing. As such, Rockbound capitalises on the view towards the water while simultaneously harnessing the calmness of the woods behind the property. In doing this, the architect designs a coastal home in dialogue with both the land and sea.

Located on the Apoptogen Peninsula, Nova Scotia, the beach house has been built on a rocky granite outcrop and sits parallel to the ocean, looking directly across the bay. Built and designed for a couple that wanted room for guests, with areas inside and out for entertaining, the home caters to the clients’ brief in layout and its connection to forest and ocean views. However, the most unique aspect of the residence is that the architect designs the house to blend into the forest and rocks while remaining as unintrusive as possible.

As seen in the house tour, there is a moment of verticality introduced where the staircase rises up to the second level and views to the water are hidden. This design tactic forces the owner and their guests to reorientate themselves as they move deeper into the home. One then arrives at the kitchen and dining room, which is complemented with dramatic views out to the water. From here, the home’s layout moves into the living room and is also all about the view and appreciating the ocean. On the lower levels are the more functional elements of the house, as well as the guest wing, while on the top floor are the office, main bedroom and ensuite. Progressing from the living room to downstairs, the architect designs a large deck that has been covered from the elements to support the clients’ love for entertaining throughout the year. Descending from here, there is a fireplace hidden among the rocks that encourages a deeper connection to land and offers a new perspective of the house and its elevated proportions.

Alongside the home’s decor and interior design elements, the architect designs a residence that considers the extreme natural environment, protecting it from wind, snow, rain, fog and storms through material selections. As such, the beach house becomes a shelter perched atop the landscape. For the exterior material palette, the architect designs the home out of concrete. CorTen steel is used as an accent to tell the story of the different climatic conditions. Eastern White Cedar, which has natural properties to help resist the weather, was also selected for its durability.

As the home is surrounded by rugged nature, the architect designs the home’s exterior to be robust, while the inside is balanced with soft textures. Moreover, warmth was brought in through furniture and fabric selections that impart a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. Responding to the changing climate and unique environmental surrounds, Rockbound by Omar Gandhi Architects is a deeply considered family home that feels restorative to the soul.

Today, we dive deep into the McLaren P1 project and we go over all the reasons it's taking a bit longer than I expected. It's still firing on all cylinders, but it's a monumental task to get this hypercar back on the road better than ever. And after that, we do a full garage update and see what's on the horizon for the channels. And yes, we have some new cars coming to the channel that will knock your socks off.

Maserati recently unveiled a new take on its really rather impressive V6-engined supercar. Formerly known as Project24, the MCXtrema does exactly what it says on the tin – it’s the most extreme thing that Maserati could come up with using the bones of the MC20, and the 62 examples that are set to be built can *only* be used on track.

It drives pretty differently too. Not least because the 3.0-litre Nettuno V6 now has new, bigger turbos, a new intake and a different exhaust system for a total of 730bhp.

All that power is sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed sequential gearbox and limited slip diff, and the MCXtrema only weighs around 1,300kg thanks to a liberal use of carbon fibre and the fact that there’s only one seat as standard in the race-spec cockpit.

Each of the 62 cars will be completely unique in its spec, costing just under £1 million. Not that it matters too much, because of course they’re all sold out already…

Embedded in the landscape, Always by Kennedy Nolan is an off-grid house of contrast – balancing light and dark, openness with retreat, and a sense of casualness with high performance.

The off-grid house sits humbly within the streetscape. Kennedy Nolan designed the house to ensure it isn’t visible from the street; it is intended to eventually be enveloped by the native landscape, its form weaving itself intricately and seamlessly within the surroundings. “From the beach, it should recede into the landscape over time, and so what we did was pull it [the home] into the side of the cliff so that it would be less and less visible,” notes founding partner of Kennedy Nolan, Patrick Kennedy.

The home is also robust, needing to withstand the harsh coastal climate, potential erosion and windy conditions typical of the Morning Peninsula where the off-grid house resides. “One of the challenges in building here is that, geologically, it is one of the most difficult soil conditions you can find in Victoria,” says Kennedy.

Beyond the bespoke front gates, designed by Indigenous designer Jack Nash who also named the off-grid house in reference to the principle of ‘always was, always will be, Aboriginal land,’ the house exists in several parts. “At the top of the site is a guesthouse and as you move down the cliff, you enter through a stone wall into an entry deck and from that deck there are several pathways into the house,” says Kennedy. “The planning is deliberately informal, designed to make you experience the landscape and the garden,” he continues. This constant connection to the outdoors enhances the sense of immersion and acts as a reminder of place.

In this sense, the design appears simple and grounded. Kennedy explains; “this house looks and feels like a beach house – it's relaxed and casual – but it’s also extremely high-performing.” He explains how this is different from many Australian beach houses in terms of thermal comfort, being both comfortable and energy efficient.

Finishes and materials are dominated by raw, natural and solid qualities that require a level of low maintenance. The stone and hard masonry on the exterior will soften over time as the planted landscape grows and eventually encompasses much of the structure. The interiors are all lined in natural materials that are non-reflective, such as timber. The choice of materials also plays into reinforcing an overall colour scheme, which is warm and tonal. To determine a colour scheme, Kennedy Nolan took cues from the client’s interest in Indigenous art as well as the hues of natural materials.

In this sense, there is a constant play between lightness and dark within the off-grid house. “We love to be in the light, to see the sun … but we are also aware that in Australia, that can sometimes be an uncomfortable thing,” explains Kennedy.

“When I think about what I’m most proud of … it’s that Always is a house that is going to improve with age; it feels like it is a place that is going to belong to this landscape over time,” reflects Kennedy. Anchored in place with strong materials, Always speaks to its namesake – a humble shelter that aims to remain unchanged for many years to come.

Top Gear tends to like Porsche 911s, and to like restomods. But when every restomod is a Porsche 911, well, our attention can waver…

However, this is a Porsche restomod that’s not a 911. It is, in fact, a 928. A 928 that French company Nardone Automotive has given a thorough refresh with the help of Podium Technologies, the Italian firm that engineered the Glickenhaus 007 LMH endurance racer and Automobili Amos Lancia Delta restomod.

Frankly, it’s gorgeous, with new carbonfibre bodywork, a revised gearbox, a breathed-on V8 engine, a futuristic-yet-retro interior, and an utterly awesome sound system.
