Evidencing the tradition of innovative work in Wellington, Eastbourne House embodies a unique response to a difficult site. Crafted by Stevens Lawson Architects, the cliffside home presents as both a retreat and lookout.

Set on the eastern side of Wellington Harbour, Eastbourne House reinforces the unusual character of local homes which, responding to harsh weather and steep terrain, have earnt the reputation of architecture ‘on the edge.’ “The building needed to be built from the top down for site access, unlike most buildings which are built from the bottom up,” says Nicholas Stevens, co-design lead on the project. “As you can imagine, logistically this makes for a far more complex and time-consuming build.” With a solid foundation, rigid structure and multitude of curved edges, the cliffside home evokes the image of a large rock that has been shaped by the weather.

From the road, residents ascend a ramped driveway to reach an undercroft: “At that point you're confronted with an extraordinary artwork by the artist John Reynolds, which is a tribute to Wellington's wild weather and its condition of living on the edge,” says Stevens. Inside the cliffside home, a helical staircase winds from the foyer to the top of the home, passing the bedroom level. A striking display of black steelwork, the feature is complete with an elegant timber floor overlay. “We wanted to create a real experience of moving through the house, almost a choreography of space” says Stevens.

At the top of the stairs is a double-height space containing the main living area. The room is calm, equally uplifting and similar to an observation post, offering a clear view of the horizon. Sliding doors can be opened to blur the boundary between the living room and deck. “The terrace itself is an interesting space in its own right,” notes Stevens. “It's not one of those terraces which sort of hangs out in space and is exposed on all sides, it’s a little bit more cave-like.” Sheltered areas for cooking and dining encourage residents to enjoy the tranquil microclimate and spend time watching nature.

As well as frequent encounters with harsh wind, the cliffside home has the capacity to withstand strong vibrations, owed to its position on a fault line. Its durable exterior is created using black glazed terracotta tiles and black aluminium; visually, the materials recede into the darkness of the native bush. “The interior is in contrast to this [image]: light and airy,” says Stevens. Forté engineered oak flooring covers the living area, staircase, and hallways. On the terrace, Forté millboard decking is used as a sustainable alternative to hardwood. “We’re really impressed by the way the millboard decking can match the oak flooring inside. It’s warm, it’s textured, it’s prefinished … we think it really adds to the atmosphere of this house,” says Stevens.

A startling take on a cliffside home, Eastbourne Residence both protects from and embraces its lively natural context. Championing uniqueness, Stevens Lawson Architects establishes a fresh iteration of architecture ‘on the edge.’

Lotus, always seemingly in a little financial trouble, hasn’t flourished under recent Geely ownership as its Chinese owners might have hoped. Deliveries of the Emira sports car were delayed; the Evija hypercar is yet to hit production; and the Eletre SUV and Emeya super-saloon have arrived just as the world is cooling on the idea of EVs.

This then, the Theory 1, is concept car to grab your attention when times are tough. The company’s next production car will be a second, smaller electric SUV (think Porsche Macan-sized) so the Theory 1 is a kind of reminder that people at Lotus are still thinking about what it means to be a Lotus, past just wearing the badge.

Thus the Theory 1 does everything from ushering in a new design language for Lotus, to showcasing a radical approach to production with just a handful of materials used for the bodywork.

It also introduces us to ‘Lotuswear’, which is an attempt to ‘evoke a sense of raw emotion and pure excitement’ when you’re behind the wheel of this 1000hp electric supercar. How does it work? With seats that can inflate on one side or the other and a steering yoke that can suddenly be ribbed, thanks to textile-based wearable robotics tech being applied to the automotive sector for the first time.

Skateboard street requires a high level of creativity, adaptability, and technical skill, as riders must be able to navigate the urban landscape and perform tricks with precision and control. Competitions in skateboard street involve riders performing a series of timed runs, with judges evaluating the difficulty, execution, and originality of their tricks.

There’s no getting away from the fact the new BMW M5 is a bit of a porker. The previous-generation super-saloon weighed 1895kg; this new one is 540kg more…

Blame the plug-in, hybridised V8, which delivers more power (up 140bhp) and torque (up 184lb ft) than the last M5, and a parsimonious 160mpg+ on the WLTP fuel test. And while figures like those probably looked enticing when BMW started development years ago, enthusiasts aren’t exactly lapping up electrified performance cars in 2024…

But, but, but… this is also an all-new BMW M5! It’s the stuff of legend, with a long legacy of always being top dog over and above rivals from Audi and Mercedes. And while there’s yet to be a new AMG version of the E-class, and Audi will soon end production of the RS6 and RS7, the M5 is here, and with a stonkingly powerful V8 too. Downsizing is not in effect!

There's a race to save a dozen small cetaceans, the last in the world of their species. They're caught as bycatch in nets set to trap a fish with a huge demand in China. Can anything be done?

It all begins in Mexico, in the Gulf of California, just 97 miles from the US, where the totoaba is endemic. The demand for its swim bladder is at the heart of the issue. Two key towns in this region, San Felipe and Santa Clara, rely almost entirely on fishing shrimp and local fish. Times are perpetually challenging but engaging in illicit totoaba fishing can yield a substantial paycheck. They became overfished in the 2010s when a catch like this could generate hundreds of thousands of dollars each month.

Adding to the severity of the situation for this endangered fish, the nets used to catch this species, as well as those used for local shrimp, have inadvertently captured a small porpoise native to the Gulf of California, Mexico: the vaquita marina. This has pushed it to the brink of extinction. The latest survey in 2024 was only able to spot 6-8 vaquitas, from 10-13 last year. The US is exerting pressure on Mexico over the issue, and scientists, along with environmentalists and law enforcement in several countries, are working tirelessly to save the vaquita, halt totoaba trafficking and develop sustainable alternatives to harmful nets.
