The Robinson Residence was initially built for the first black physician hired at the Los Angeles County General Hospital and his wife, Doris Robinson, a prominent writer and TV/Radio Host. The Architect was said to have been a Black Architect; however, the original plans have only the initials “T.D” which is something that isn’t too out of character for a time when Black Architects had to study under white Architects and sometimes even had to hide behind the names of white architects to practice, We have since moved on from this style of practice, but we wonder how often and how much this happened.
The current owners of the Robinson Residence, Marc and Catherine, are history buffs and have completely fallen in love with the story of the home. They are doing everything they can to share its story and preserve its history. When they purchased the house, there were several things they had to do to bring it up to city code, which would have been a bit easier if they had taken away some of the characteristics that were initially built. Still, they wanted to preserve the legacy of the home. Today, it is one of the only modernist homes in a neighborhood primarily overrun by historic Craftsman.

Seascape is ensconced above a rocky cove on a sprawling 4000-acre farm on New Zealand’s South Island. So remote, most people arrive at this secret house via helicopter or a long, winding farm track.
The secret house is humble, designed to exist harmoniously within the pristine cove it inhabits. The house itself is small, with just three rooms – a lobby, a combined living and sleeping area and a bathroom. It features an undulating glass wall that offers a 180-degree view of powerful, crashing waves, just metres away.
Seascape is designed as a place for couples to retreat to; the brief embedded in a kind of fantasy of a lovers' cave. Designed for only two occupants and simple in its arrangement, Seascape celebrates the simple rituals of life as a couple; bathing, sleeping, eating and connecting. This secret house is a vehicle to allow people to connect with each other and nature.
Complementing a compact and simple floorplan, the views are all-encompassing and make the space feel much larger than its actual size. An interlocking geometric facade allows views both of the bay and out to rocky spires.
Seascape is built using all-natural, local materials, including in-situ poured concrete floors and an earth-turfed roof. Notably, the home is constructed from rock quarried from the farm where it resides. With no way of getting a concrete truck to the site, all the concrete was mixed and poured by hand. The home is lined with horizontal macrocarpa wood, forming integrated joinery, wall and ceiling panels that soften the interior space both aesthetically and acoustically. Natural materials are complemented by pared-back, minimal furnishings that are mainly sourced from the locale.
Seascape’s design is also informed by nature from a very pragmatic standpoint. A large wall of double-glazed, low e-glass sits under a precast concrete earthquake shell, while shatterproof steel mullions utilise earthquake-resistant sliding heads. The structure’s integration into the escarpment above also protects occupants from falling debris. Moreover, “the wood is a reference to the ecology of the peninsula and what has been lost and here, we have used it sparingly as a liner. But it is also as a reference to the replanting and reforestation program that is in its infancy at the moment,” says Andrew Patterson, director at Patterson Associates. The home is self-sustainable, relying on on-site water harvesting and wastewater treatment.
Patterson Associates designs a secret house that is just as much a part of the landscape as it is a shelter. “Our philosophy reflects a New Zealand philosophy,” says Patterson. By tapping into the idea of connection through the natural world, this deeply moving cottage embodies what we all strive for in our homes and lives – a sense of belonging. For Patterson, the greatest joy about the project is staying there himself and experiencing this deep, unwavering affinity with nature.

Sean Brunson and his wife Geri are no strangers to home remodels, but embarking on the journey of building a brand-new home from scratch was an entirely different experience. The couple, deeply inspired by the sleek and timeless designs of Modernist architects from the 1950s and 60s, found an ideal location to bring their dream home to life. This project was not just about constructing a house, but about creating a space that reflects their shared love for design and architecture.
In the spirit of hands-on creativity, Sean and Geri decided to take on several aspects of the construction themselves. They embraced the challenge of getting involved directly, whether it was painting walls, doing the landscaping, or managing smaller installations. This not only helped them save money but also gave them a deep sense of accomplishment and connection to the home they were building. Sean’s long-standing affection for Modernist furniture is woven into the fabric of the house, with Florence Knoll pieces taking center stage, complemented by other iconic designs that echo the era's ethos. Their home isn’t just beautifully decorated; it’s a testament to their personal journey and design sensibilities.
The end result is nothing short of remarkable—a home that exudes both style and warmth, a rare combination that strikes a perfect balance. As you approach the house, the post-and-beam construction and expansive walls of glass immediately catch your eye, signaling the Brunsons' commitment to merging indoor and outdoor living. Each room is a showcase of incredible design, yet the space feels inviting and lived-in, not just a display of aesthetics but a true home. This thoughtful blending of elements from the past with modern-day comforts creates an environment that is as visually stunning as it is comfortable, embodying the very essence of what Sean and Geri envisioned for their dream home.

How medal event is judged:
1 heat of 12 athletes competing with two 45 second runs each. Best run counts, scored 1-100. If an athlete falls during their run, the clock buzzer will sound and the run is over. Top 8 athletes from the elimination will advance to the final. Judges will score competitors throughout the contest.
Skateboard street is a style of skateboarding that takes place on a course simulating urban terrain using everyday objects such as curbs, stairs, handrails, benches and quarter pipes as obstacles. Skateboarders use these obstacles to perform a variety of tricks, grinds, and slides, often combining multiple maneuvers into a single trick. Skateboard street requires a high level of creativity, adaptability, and technical skill, as riders must be able to navigate the urban landscape and perform tricks with precision and control. Competitions in skateboard street involve riders performing a series of timed runs, with judges evaluating the difficulty, execution, and originality of their tricks.

Today Architectural Digest travels to the Vancouver countryside to tour the 75.9 House. Designed by Omer Arbel, this unique structure got its name from being the 9th iteration of the 75th idea they authored in their studio. Omer’s design plays with the idea of creating future ancient structures using concrete in a soft, fluid way, letting the material dictate its form. How medal event is judged:
1 heat of 10 athletes competing in a 30 minute jam session with :30 second maximum runs. Athletes will take as many runs as possible within the 36 minutes. Best run counts, scored 1-100. Judges will score competitors throughout the contest.
Skateboard vert is a style of skateboarding that involves performing tricks on a large U-shaped ramp called a half-pipe or vert ramp. The rider gains speed by pumping up and down the ramp, building momentum for aerial maneuvers that can reach heights of up to 15 feet or more. Skaters perform a variety of tricks, including spins, flips, and grabs, while soaring through the air above the ramp. Competitions typically involve skaters performing a series of runs, with judges awarding points based on the difficulty, execution, and overall style of their tricks.
