About 2 months ago while I was scrolling through TikTok, I stumbled upon THE DON Madfunz, a guy from South Africa with amazing energy. His taste in music grabbed my attention, but it was his dancing, smile and story that really hooked me.

The Don would walk 9 miles to work every single day despite the weather or his personal safety… he risked it all for his family… and dreamed one day of his very slow walk being over and finally being able to own a car for himself so he can provide for his family

When I was thinking about the “HEALING” music video, I couldn’t get Don out of my head... I knew I had to get him involved… so I hit up my friend, and director, Theo Skudra, and we decided to make a video following a day in Don’s life.

We filmed in Dududu, a rural area about an hour outside of Durban. We captured Don's everyday life – the simple joys, the positivity, and the resilience.

While I couldn’t be there, the best part of this whole process was at the end when I surprised Don with a car. Seeing his reaction was priceless. It was one of his dreams to own a car, and knowing I could help make that happen was incredible.

With this video, I wanted to show that Don’s positive attitude and joyful spirit are something we can all learn from, no matter what we’re going through. His story is a reminder that even when life gets tough, you can still find reasons to smile. I hope this video touches your hearts like it did mine.

Today, AD joins architect Masato Igarashi of IGArchitects to see how he makes the most of his small Tokyo home. Tokyo has the highest population concentration in all of Japan, so large plots of land have been divided into two or three across the city, making tiny living the reality for many residents. While his home is technically only two floors, Igarashi fits an impressive seven staggered levels into the home with no walls, creating an open space where the seventh floor feels like the same room as the first.

This home’s design facilitates a rare co-habitation with the forested landscape and represents a balance of modern architecture and the purity of nature. From a distance, Edition Office’s Federal House appears like a shadow nestled into the folding hills of the hinterland, a sharp contrast to the vibrant surrounds.

Upon approach, the textures of the exterior convey a distinct dialogue with nature. This home’s design acts to deepen relationships between people and the natural setting and intimately shows the inner machinations of the environment.

The brief outlined a home that would act as a sanctuary and elemental respite from the clients’ high-pressure careers. The occupants of Federal House enjoy a relationship with the hillside, forest and grassland at the site’s rear as well as panoramic views over the forested horizon from the heavily inset living-zoned platform and sheltered pool. A reverberation of settler colonial homesteads of the past, this home’s design inverts the front verandah typology, looking inward to orbit an internal courtyard and present a tightly controlled outer envelope.

Federal House’s interior spaces act as an elevated stage, a refuge from which to observe the passing of time through the shifting weather and seasons of the Northern Rivers hinterland. The covered outdoor spaces welcome in the landscape, where modestly scaled living spaces and bedrooms lie. A large inner void draws the sky into the depths of the structure, and the pool reflects the solar and lunar cycles across its surface.

This home’s design is clearly delineated, with the living spaces placed to the north and south sides of the central garden to allow for social interactions, and the sleeping and bathing spaces situated within the eastern wing provide a series of modest enclaves for rest and solitude. The subterranean pool grounds the project and links to the planted void at the centre of the structure. Here, the water takes on profound meaning, connecting users directly to the natural elements.

Materials used amplify the experiential qualities of Federal House. Aaron Roberts, director at Edition Office, recalls visiting the site early in the design process, recounting, “we found ourselves drawn to the tree line, to the shadows cast and observed the horizon from a point sheltered from the direct sun.” This notion of observing nature in shadow inspired this home’s design, its darkened appearance, the gradient timber tones used to define functionality and gives insight into the studio’s mindful approach.

Federal House is a testament to the design prowess of Edition Office and its understanding of the nuances of environmental connections. “Watching the sun slowly rise, shift in its great arc across the sky and then sink back down behind the tree line is endlessly captivating from the home,” says Kim Bridgland, director at Edition Office. The courage to experiment has resulted in this home’s design – a unique residence in tune with its surroundings, with the harmonious merging of modern architecture with the purity of the location.

A modern concrete house, Forever House by MCK Architects overcomes the complexities of a sloping site and a crowded suburb through a considered approach to design, the built form and the landscape.

Located in Seaforth, the modern concrete house is perched above the Middle Harbour foreshore, appearing as a simple concrete form more akin to an object floating on the land rather than something built to be entrenched in it. “It’s still a dense suburb, but it has a wonderful sense of calm to it,” notes Steve Koolloos, architect and director at MCK Architects.

Upon entry into the modern concrete house, there is a seamless departure from the busyness of the streetscape that any design lover would appreciate. “Visitors entering at street level climb up with the site’s topography,” says Koolloos. For the homeowners, entering the home is a slightly different experience. “They arrive at street level and are able to park their car in the garage, which acts as a basement, and enter at the rear.” This space features a glass wall into the pool, allowing filtered light to enter.

The home is blessed with vistas of the still waters of Middle Harbour. Glass walls and retractable doors connect to the views at every opportunity, allowing for cross-ventilation and natural light from the north, while smart landscaping by Lone Pine Landscapes creates privacy.

Similarly, as one makes their way through the modern concrete house, engaging with the landscape to north and south is inevitable. “On the northern side, we have the rear yard and pool … and on the southern side, we have a landscaped terrace from which people can sit and enjoy the views of Middle Harbour.”

The floor plan relies on vertical circulation via a stacked stairwell leading all the way from the basement up to the first floor. The first floor houses the more private rooms and is split into two zones – one for children and one for adults – separated by a slim void that allows natural light to penetrate deep into the living room. Meanwhile, the master bedroom is the only space on the first floor that runs the whole width of the plan, with a glass walk-in robe and sheer curtains. “The glass is curved to soften its feeling as one moves in and around the space, while the ensuite offers a very calm, private space but still enables its users to visually connect to the backyard,” says Koolloos.

The interior design is pared-back and minimalist, with materials and decor dominated by concrete and timber. Other textures throughout the home include natural stones and timber textures, as well as the blank, white canvases of the white plasterboard wall.

The resulting modern concrete house is a beautiful fusion of ideas and people, equal parts the architect and the client. “I am most proud of how the clients shared our vision,” notes Koolloos. “When I walk through this home, I can see and feel the parts we have brought to the table, and I’m equally as excited about the parts the owners have brought into the home.” Similarly, MCK Architects is deliberately not driven by a particular style or aesthetic, which was also a challenge at times.

Connected to both the natural and suburban environments, Perch House is a dream home built to provide dramatic views and private interiors. Embodying the philosophy of pH+ Architects on a unique site, the home celebrates indoor-outdoor living.

Located in the residential suburb of Castlecrag, Perch House is a dream home built to reflect the local context. The layout of the suburb is designed to follow the contours of the land and thus promotes a respectful approach to the natural surrounds. “The site is really special … it’s really dramatic topography,” says Drew Hamilton, co-founder of PH+ Architects. “Midway through the site, there's a 10-metre sandstone cliff that cuts east-west. Below that you have the Castlecrag northern escarpment, which is pretty wild bushland and that runs all the way down to the water about 80 metres below.” The historic garden suburb is visible to the south and mediates the two contrasting areas.

pH+ Architects elevates the dream home built to capture the best views by adding a northern terrace that cantilevers four metres over the cliff. The main living space is then oriented towards the escarpment. On the other side of the home, a series of ramps offer step-free access to the roof terrace while defining a buffer zone between the house and public domain. “We then have elected to veil that buffer zone with a floating Corten screen,” says Hamilton. “This is made up of a series of fins; each one is configured individually to strike an appropriate balance between privacy for the residence and engagement with the streetscape.” Set across three sides of the house, the screen also frames northern views.

Inside the home, a dramatic hallway is naturally lit using clerestory glazing. At the end of the hallway sits the main living space running from the front of the house to the back, capturing views to both the north and south. Upstairs, a bespoke office, primary bedroom and ensuite look out to the escarpment, while the lower level includes a garage, wine-storage room, laundry room and three bedrooms. Two of the bedrooms are north-facing; the other is a tranquil space facing the buffer zone. Outside, the swimming pool projects from underneath the cantilever, offering water-to-water views.

To encourage indoor-outdoor living, pH+ Architects crafts a dream home built to foster a sense of spatial continuity. Glazing and flush thresholds dissolve the visual boundaries between spaces while materials continue from the outside of the home into the interiors. In addition to planting, exposed concrete and sandstone are consistent elements of the project that relate to the outdoors. “The house is really all about allowing the client to celebrate and enjoy this dramatic sight,” says Hamilton. “So the detailing feeds into that, where it's clean, calm, decluttered – basically not drawing attention to itself deliberately – to try and leave enough space to focus the attention to the exterior wherever possible.”

Following the example of the layout of Castlecrag, pH+ Architects ensures that the design of Perch House is sympathetic to the natural landscape. The residence is a dream home built to sit comfortably between escarpment and suburb, allowing residents to enjoy the remarkable location.

If Australia is one of surfing’s greatest nations then Sydney might just be the world’s greatest surfing city. With four-million people sharing the world’s largest natural harbour and 50-miles of coastline, blessed with incredible waves year round, Sydney is a modern metropolis on the water, with a storied, gritty surfing underbelly.

From Isabel Letham famously riding waves with Hawaiian Duke Kahanamoku at Freshwater Beach in 1915 through to a string of world champions including Tom Carroll, Mark Occhilupo and Layne Beachley, and on down the line to modern stars like Molly Picklum and Jarvis Earle, Sydney’s competitive bloodline runs deep. On the back of radical surfing Sydney was not only responsible for the surfboard revolutions of the Brookvale Six and the invention of Simon Anderson’s thruster, but spawned an irreverent and sardonic multi-million surf industry of its own. If that’s not enough, the good old Aussie cafe, complete with avocado toast, washed down with a flat white, has become a global phenomenon, and they were largely born of the beaches too.

What is BMX Street?

BMX street is a style of BMX that takes place on a course simulating urban terrain using everyday objects such as curbs, stairs, handrails, benches and quarter pipes as obstacles. Riders use these obstacles to perform a variety of tricks, grinds, and slides, often combining multiple maneuvers into a single trick. BMX street requires a high level of creativity, adaptability, and technical skill, as riders must be able to navigate the urban landscape and perform tricks with precision and control. Competitions in BMX street involve riders performing a series of timed runs, with judges evaluating the difficulty, execution, and originality of their tricks.

Letting their imagination run wild, the team at Nina Maya Interiors has created celebrity holiday home Residence F from the ground up. Located upon a hill, Residence F is afforded breathtaking views of the immaculate Sydney harbour bridge and city as well as sightlines across to Manly. Leading to the celebrity holiday home is a long driveway that offers seclusion and privacy to the inhabitants. Positioned at the end the drive is the residence, which slowly reveals itself before a landscaped walkway leads to a pivot door. Through the front door, the house tour slowly reveals the unique character, decor and interior design of the celebrity holiday home. In the centre of the room is the custom-built staircase – its meticulously carved curve design, LED steps and skylight above frame the staircase as an art piece.

Involved in the architecture, planning, development, project management and interior design, Nina Maya was able to remain hands-on over the five years it took to create the coastal home. Though Maya Sternberg and Nina Maya Interiors followed the clients’ original brief, which was to create a world class space that was fitting of the location, the team took risks with the overall design. This was also backed by a close relationship with the clients as Residence F is the third property they have worked on together. This project was to be the clients’ showcase house, where they could entertain guests, spend time with family and friends and admire the city. As the celebrity holiday home is surrounded by heritage trees, the house has a monolithic feeling and is able to hold its own amid the landscape. To achieve this, the architect covered the entire building in Italian travertine, which gives the exterior decor a sense of gravitas, purpose and history while also allowing the breathtaking home to feel as if it’s always been there.

Shown in the house tour are several spaces where the owners can connect with the landscape. One such place is the unique glass conservatory on the ground level. Additionally, several organic-shaped skylights are designed to offer views to the treetops, while sliding glass doors emphasise seamless indoor-outdoor living. Part of the home’s iconic interior design is the kitchen, which has become the heart of the home. The kitchen also creates the design language for the home as the architect has selected an Italian stone with colour variations and a sinuous curve to fill the space.

Continuing to push the boundaries with each project – and Residence F is no exception – the team created a custom glass brick for the home’s exterior, which invites a unique quality of light into the interior. From the dappled morning light in the conservatory to the terrace where the sunset soaks the pool and courtyard with a warm glow, the celebrity holiday home grasps natural light at every opportunity. Through class and considered detailing, Residence F makes the most of its surrounds and provides an elegant base to vacation and entertain.

In Argentina, the Martinez family name is synonymous with skateboarding. Milton Martinez was literally born into skating, raised as he was within his skateboarding parents’ skateshop in Mar del Plata.

His father Tatu is practically Argentinian skateboarding royalty from the formative generation, and while Milton quickly followed in his footsteps to become the biggest skateboarding name in his home country, the beachside surf town he called home is unfortunately no place to cultivate a career as a professional skater.

Without any English, Milton caught a plane to the US and never looked back. He hustled his way through the streets to make enough money to eventually move his family to California, where they reside to this day.

Along the way, he became SOTY 2019 in a career blow-up that saw him put down more heavy markers in the US than anyone else of his era. Skate Tales takes Milton Martinez back to where it all began, as he and Madars re-trace what has be one of the most starchasing skateboarding stories of them all!

Davis delivered yet another viral moment, successfully defending his WBA Lightweight World Title by knocking out the previously unbeaten Frank “The Ghost” Martin with a vicious left hand at 1:29 of the eighth round in the PBC Pay-Per-View main event on Prime Video Saturday night, which marked the 100th championship fight night at the historic MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Fighting in his first world title bout, Martin delivered a high-level performance. Davis (30-0, 28 KOs), however, showed once again that he is indeed special.

“Thank you guys for coming out, great event. I appreciate everyone who made this possible. We did it once again. On to the next!” said Davis.

A packed house full of 13,249 were on-hand to witness a masterful performance from Davis. Martin (18-1, 12 KOs) used quick combinations and elite athleticism to bank the early rounds. Davis took his time, opening up in the third round and constantly pinning Martin against the ropes.

“Frank Martin was a great fighter. He put up a good four to five rounds,” said Davis. “I was finding my range. (Martin) had a decent jab and was moving a lot and I just had to break him down as the fight went on.”

The undefeated three-division world champion applied steady, intelligent pressure, slowly breaking Martin down and setting him up for the highlight-reel finish in the eighth. With Martin backed into a corner, Davis rocked him with a powerful left uppercut followed by a left cross that left Martin flat on his back. As Martin struggled to rise, referee Harvey Dock wisely waved the fight off.

“I knew he wasn’t getting back up because of the way he fell, and I knew he was gonna tire himself out, that was the whole gameplan,” said Davis.

“I’m holding my head high,” said Martin. “At the end of the day, I came out to be great, but I came up short. I got caught with a shot that I didn’t see, one of those shots that comes from underneath and it went from there. I guess I didn’t make the count, but I appreciate everybody that came out, everybody that’s been a part of this event.

“I’ll be back. Going to go watch the film, get better and grow. Y’all will see me again.”

Davis has similar plans. “Now we go back to the drawing board and I want to fight all of them.”

He honed his craft of vert skating in isolation on a vert ramp inside a warehouse rented by his mother, Ramona, in Oakland, CA. Max quickly became a formidable force in the skateboarding world and played a crucial role in the inception of Real Skateboards, a powerhouse company founded by Tommy Guerrero of the Bones Brigade and Jim Thiebaud.

With a remarkable career spanning over 20 years, Max eventually developed a deep interest in chopper motorcycles. Applying the same intensity to motorcycle building, he soon made a name for himself in the chopper scene, crafting one impressive bike after another.

Max is a true talent who would likely excel in any field he chose, but he has dedicated himself to being both a lifelong skateboarder and motorcycle builder. Paul Rodriguez, also known as “P-Rod” was recognized as a prodigy at the young age of 14, only two years after he started skating. His consistency, effortless style and persistence on his board led Paul to travel far from his home town of Northridge, CA to the City Streets around the world as a part of the legendary City Stars team. His passion for skating and filming with his friends led to his breakout part in Logic 6 in 2000, Street Cinema in 2001 and landed him Rookie of the Year in 2002 for his part in Tranworld’s video production “In Bloom.” He turned pro later that year.
