Set at the foot of Mt. Banahaw in Nagcarlan, Laguna is landscape artist and painter Ponce Veridiano's home and gallery he calls the Tauhai Villa. The home is built on a steep terrain by a stream, surrounded by foliage. Veridiano was inspired by architects Tadao Ando and Frank Lloyd Wright when building this structure. Veridiano allows plants to be wild - trees cling on to the stone walls, the aerial roots of the Monstera plants crawl over the walls, vines dangle above windows.

The home also functions as Studio 88, a gallery that exhibits Veridiano's works of art. Only starting during the pandemic, Veridiano's early pieces were charcoal drawings of still life and now have evolved to colorful splashes of abstract paintings.

What is the Ophanim Angel in the Bible?
The word ‘Ophanim’ refers to ‘the wheels’ seen in Ezekiel’s vision of the chariot in Ezekiel 1:15–21—from the bible. According to Ezekiel’s narrative in the Bible, they are creatures created of interlocking gold wheels, with the exterior of each wheel covered with many eyes. They move by floating across the sky. The bible does not regard the Ophanim as an angel. However, in the Jewish angelic hierarchy, they are entrusted with defending God’s throne as the highest in Maimonides’ order and are the closest of angels to God.

Uncover the unexpected things in architect William Smart’s own home, Stokes 14. Perhaps one of the most striking of the unexpected things in architect William Smart’s home is its vaulted volume. “When people walk into the space they are often in awe, and I haven't tired of watching their faces light up as they see this quite unconventional space. I think it’s because it's not square and the walls aren't vertical,” reflects Smart. “We made the vault by laying bricks over a timber frame and then spraying them with a very thin layer of concrete. This vault is structurally self-sufficient, so it’s a perfect structural shape and I think that's part of its beauty – it's so pure in its geometry.”

Somehow, large windows sit harmoniously within the distinct, angular shape of the home. “One of the biggest challenges on this project was installing the windows above,” says Smart. To achieve this, the windows were cut from a large sheet in quite unusual shapes. The difficult part was getting these shapes to fit in the openings, like a puzzle. For Smart, watching the windows get installed was “too stressful” and admits he had to leave after just half an hour.

Another one of the unexpected things in architect William Smart’s home is the materiality, which is dominated by subtle finishes that often go unnoticed but have a significant impact. For example, the bricks used are Bowral Chillingham from Bowral Bricks, which are glued together in a way that means the mortar joints aren’t visible. “This gives a lovely layer and texture to the room, kind of subtle to see but when you know it's there, it’s very beautiful,” notes Smart.

The unexpected things in architect William Smart’s home extend to furniture and decor. For example, a coffee table doubles as a television. “We couldn't hang a television on the wall even if we tried, because the walls aren't vertical, so we designed a coffee table to lift up like a giant laptop and inside we have the television, a soundbar and trays for food,” says Smart. Similarly, an art stand designed especially for the apartment – as it is difficult to hang art on the vertical walls – seems to float within the space. “We like the idea of layering the space with things that float in the room, and I think the design of this art piece, where one element is just laid next to each other, but done beautifully, is the epitome of our design essence,” notes Smart.

Of all the unexpected things in architect William Smart’s home, the staircase is his favourite. “It is completely freestanding, so it’s supported off one column at the base and it spirals up through the building without touching the sides, which allows light to come up or go down to the level below,” says Smart. Made of steel with stone laid on the steps like pavers, the staircase is almost an art piece in itself.

A dream home built off the coast of Aotearoa’s (New Zealand) mainland, on the northern edge of Waiheke Island, Boatshed Bay by Patterson Associates is a private beach house nestled on a sprawling 4.5-hectare site.

Named after the bay the house is perched upon, the dwelling is a dream home built around a series of self-contained volumes, designed to embrace seaward vistas. “I think it’s really important to design a beach house that’s on the water, from the water, because that’s the prettiest view and that's the view people remember,” notes Andrew Patterson, director at Patterson Associates. Working alongside project lead Richard Andrews and builder Kevin Glamuzina, the team were able to conceive a robust home intrinsically linked to its location.

Referring to the gradual expansion of the typical New Zealand beach house, Patterson revelled in the fact that the family decided to demolish the original house and create a dream home built from scratch, meaning the architecture was able to be designed as a whole. “For us, it was the simplicity and the relationship and the unity between the concept and the detail of it that really was going to make the house sing,” says Patterson.

The architecture of Boatshed Bay is equally about the outdoor spaces as well as the interior design. “This part of New Zealand is a very temperate, almost subtropical environment,” says Patterson. Spread around a central pool, two volumes outline a U-shaped floor plan, while a smaller cottage was also relocated onsite and refurbished for visitor accommodation. “The courtyard forms the main circulation of the house,” notes Patterson, “There are no corridors or lobbies in this house … all of the rooms naturally open out into the courtyard.” This architecture allows the home to feel casual and informal, creating opportunities for people to bump into one another while wandering between inside and out.

The team constructed a dream home built with a few main materials – grey sea-aged timber, in-situ concrete, and brass and bronze. Robust materials are favoured for the facade and interior design, the building sitting atop a concrete raft and framed by a steel-and-timber roof. “Cedar used on the project was from Rosenfeld Kidson, who we worked with to deliver a beautiful cladding solution that consists of a custom vertical batten, so we ended up with a seamless solution with no visible fixings,” says Andrews. Natural stone also features throughout the interior design, complemented by a copper standing seam roof and brass hardware in the bathrooms and kitchen.

For Patterson, his favourite part of a dream home built on Waiheke Island is in the detail, “which is so rigorous for such a casual house.” For Andrews, “it’s the beautiful ribbon roof, which looks like it’s floating over the glass.” He adds; “Having the opportunity to revisit Boatshed Bay after five years, the house sits beautifully in the landscape, the materials have weathered, and the house sits beautifully within the environment.”

Set off on my 1967 generator shovelhead to meet Aaron in the Cotswolds. He was riding his 70s shovelhead, and we kicked things off by visiting Jeremy Clarkson’s brewery before checking out a little village called Burton-on-the-Water. Proper scenic spot.

After that, we found a nearby campsite to crack a few beers and build a fire to keep warm. Night didn’t go so smooth for Aaron, though—his blow-up bed wouldn’t hold air. My fancy one from Kilos? No issues at all.

Next morning, we raided the campsite fridge for some leftover breakfast from previous guests and hit the road to Wales to meet Adam on his 1982 FXR shovelhead.

We aimed for this fancy campsite with a great view in Penmaen, but of course, we’d booked the tent pitches all wrong and only had space for one. Only option? Upgrade to glamping for the final night.

Once we found the campsite, we decided to head to a town about 20 minutes away for a few drinks and to find a good spot to hang out. On the way, my headlight decided to give up. A few roadside attempts didn’t sort it, but we managed to get it sorted at a garage before riding back to camp. Once back at camp, it was all about fires, beers, and enjoying the clear night sky.

The next day, I set off early to hit the road back home. But along the way, my oil cap rattled loose, and the horseshoe tank spat oil everywhere, causing the bike to cut out on the motorway. After scarring my head trying to figure it out, I spotted a Shell garage in the distance across a farmer’s field. Feeling like I was in a game of Frogger, I made it to the garage and grabbed whatever oil I could find to fire the bike back up.

It didn’t take long, though, for things to go sideways again. The cheap oil I’d bought was pouring out of a bottom-end gasket that had a small split I’d been putting off fixing for too long. The oil covered my back wheel, making the bike slip a little, and I knew I had to call it a day. Ended up calling recovery and retreating from the ride.

I’ve only known Aaron for just over a year, and this was only the second time meeting Adam (we met at a chopper show this summer), but I can honestly say these guys are solid—true friends for life.

Once a year we gather up all our Creators and bring ‘em to an undisclosed location somewhere off the grid for a week of collaboration, innovation, art, music, and of course, plenty of surfing.

This year was no different, save for getting our hands on a few of Miki Dora’s personal boards. The two logs served as the catalyst for shaping inspiration, after all, we were camped in the hills surrounding his home break: First Point.

What transpired over the week was raw, creative freedom amongst a group of friends that are very rarely all in the same zip code, let alone the same shaping bay and makeshift laminating tent.

We present to you The Creators Gathering: Malibu. We hope you enjoy it.

Our Creators Gathering took place in early 2024 around the Malibu zone. While the community and friends that showed us so much hospitality are still reeling and healing from the recent devastating fires, we want to recognize the severity of the disaster that has stricken such a special place.
