Mark Bullivant, principal at SAOTA, reveals his 5 essentials for designing a home that connects to nature at the firm’s Montauk project on Long Island.
This project is a multi-level home on a sloping site near the eastern tip of Long Island, a few hours from Manhattan. Speaking from the project, Bullivant shares the 5 essentials for designing a home that embraces its context and expresses a deep connection to nature. The home’s desirable southern orientation, ocean views and staggering cliff-like location proved a valuable jumping off point, and the firm has distilled their steps to achieving a residence connected to nature.
For Bullivant, one of the 5 essentials for designing a home that feels connected to the natural environment within which it exists is harnessing natural light. “Because the property is south facing, we were able to use quite a lot of glazing on the southern facade,” says Bullivant. “What’s great about the large expanses of glazing is it really allows the occupants to keep to the rhythm of the site.”
The large glazing systems employed at this project not only allow for uninterrupted views, but they can be retracted completely, facilitating a seamless connection between indoor and out when the doors are open, particularly in the summer months. It’s undoubtedly one of the 5 essentials for designing a home that is inherently connected to nature.
As well as this, the consistent flooring – which appears to extend seamlessly over the threshold from the internal spaces to the outdoor terrace –exists in harmony with its environs. The same notion was applied to the ceiling, which is “carried through to reinforce the visual connection to the outdoors,” says Bullivant.
SAOTA’S approach to the layout and spatial programming, which steps down as one moves further through the building, is also one of the 5 essentials for designing a home connected to the landscape. At the Montauk project, it enhances the presence of the outdoors by orienting the experience towards the views. “You’re not looking through furniture and are far more connected to the environment. You’re able to live in the view.”
Another of the 5 essentials for designing a home connected to nature involves the exterior materiality. At Montauk, it is defined by a palette of highly durable and contextually relevant materials including charred timber cladding and local split face granite. This combination has played a pivotal role in settling the structure into the landscape.
Working with the terrain and following the site’s topography was the last of the 5 essentials for designing a home that is harmonious with its site. Here, the garage sits at street level before the rest of the home falls away with the sloping site towards the beach. This minimises the home’s visual impact to the street and ensures passers-by can see the horizon over the home’s roofline.
These 5 essentials – from the expansive glazing and site-sensitive materials to the landscaping that envelops the structure’s edges – culminate in a home that, while grand, expresses a visceral connection to its immediate context.

About two years ago, my friend Miles Sebald decided to travel up to Dead Horse, Alaska, with his bike and ride south in one push to the opposite side of the world in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. Erika and I made plans to meet up with Miles when he reached Patagonia, where we biked and fished with him for 9 days.

Extreme big-air kitesurfer Lasse Walker pulled off a world-first by jumping over the low-flying plane of Red Bull Air Race pilot Łukasz 'Luke' Czepiela. To achieve it Lasse needed to use a perfectly timed breaking wave as ramp to for his kiteboard, as Luke flew the aeroplane at an incredibly low altitude using a headwind to keep his speed low. With the weather conditions along the coast of Cape Town being less than ideal, Luke and Lasse need to combine their aeiral skills and experience at the right moment.

Having been obsessed with both Seventies Mustangs and hairy chested Trans-Am racing, Chris Ashton – co-founder/design director of video game company Turtle Rock Studios – wanted to hand-build himself an old school race-car for the road. But with Chris being a keen autocrosser, it had to be functional. This Mustang runs massive rubber – 315mm for the front and 345mm out back, all wrapped in super sticky Toyo R888R track tyres, which Chris had to hand form three-inch steel fender flares for the bodywork to make them fit. It also runs a carbureted LS427 – GM’s aluminium-blocked 7.0-litre beast, now making 625bhp and around 560ft lb of torque.
Where the Mustang is all analogue techniques and old school knowledge, the GT40 is a different beast. It’s underpinned by modern methodology and contemporary componentry. Unsurprisingly, Chris’ handiwork, dedication and sickening obsession runs throughout the whole car. Attached to the Ford Racing 52XS V8 engine (putting out 580bhp and 445lb ft) are headers and a handmade octopus equal length exhaust. It’s a majestic Medusa-like plait of metalwork that not only looks stunning but amplifies a classic Americana noise to perfection...
So, the question is - which is your favourite?

Nestled between the forest and the ocean on the east coast of New Zealand's North Island, Te Arai Beach House manifests as a contemporary cabin in the woods.
“The power of the site when we first visited was in the ocean, the forest and the sand dunes. So we wanted to provide a building that doesn't challenge or reduce the sense of beauty that's already there,” says Tim Hay, design director and co-founder at Fearon Hay. “We instantly looked, in terms of the architecture, to references that related to those different thresholds – the ability to emerge from the forest, discover the ocean, but still have a sense of protection,” notes Hay. “So this idea of the cabin in the woods was an idea that stuck from very early on.”
From afar, Te Arai Beach House appears to be a series of simple, unambiguous silhouettes. However, as one moves closer, complexity is revealed through blurred thresholds, operable screens and considered openings. The first building is a cabin that contains a garage and guest occupation. “This sits between an open space that frames a courtyard and the main building, which is set to the ocean, and is fundamentally a pair of open suites that capture an open plan living space between them,” explains Hay.
Grounded in the desire to design a cabin in the woods, there is a strong connection between materiality and the forest. Timber is used for the facade, with the cedar also used inside, “but with an oiled treatment, so it has a warmer, richer hue to it than the weathered, silvered exterior,” says Hay. Decayed concrete that evokes a sense of time also features throughout, used as a counterpoint to the timber. Meanwhile, shutters provide a sense of breathing and reduction of light that further softens the building.
Interior design by Sonja Hawkins, who is also the homeowner, takes a similarly layered and contextual approach. “When you are building from scratch, the temptation is always to incorporate everything you dreamed of and what the budget allows for, but in this case, it was almost the opposite,” reflects Hawkins. “We wanted a very simple dwelling that allowed us to live a very simple life.”
Grounded in the cabin in the woods theme and with references to the farmhouse vernacular, the environment inspires the interiors. “I used both the ocean aspect and the forest within my thinking,” says Hawkins. A natural palette dominates, with warm and earthy tones favoured. “I've used the green of the forest and then within that, we have moments of darker elements, like the painted kitchen cabinetry and some sculptural elements.”
The interior design, natural environment and materials combine to create this cabin in the woods, evoking a simple sense of habitation and a pure experience of the site. “The most rewarding part of designing a home like this is the relationships and the results we've achieved with a client and a collaborator,” reflects Hay. Hawkins adds; “I think I’m most proud of how quietly the building sits within the environment and it just feels so peaceful and so at home.”

Overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Whale Beach embodies a thoughtful approach to materiality and context. Inside a home that disappears into nature, Shaun Lockyer Architects (SLA) honoured the unique site by capturing the spirit of the suburb.
While championing a strong, geometric form, Whale Beach is thoroughly integrated with Sydney’s coastal landscape. “It is an incredibly special part of the country with a relaxed, casual environment,” says Shaun Lockyer, design director at SLA. “It’s a destination for Sydneysiders to get away for the weekend.” The design brief focused on creating a serene, elegant home that overcomes the challenge of four changes in site elevation. Whale Beach also sees coastal details layered inside a home that disappears into nature. Natural materials are selected and consistently applied to ensure that the tactile quality of the surroundings is celebrated in each interior space.
In Whale Beach, SLA approaches regionally inspired subtropical modernism with characteristic enthusiasm. The project reflects a particular focus on the way that the organic is used and highlighted inside a home that disappears into nature. Featuring rugged materials such as off-form concrete, weathered timber and natural stone, the home is imbued with a sense of honesty. “We've tried to lean into the idea of a coastal vernacular, where we have weathered timber on the outside of the house that is light and bright, and honey-coloured stones that sort of really speak to the colour of the sand of Whale Beach, which is unique,” says Michael Ford, associate director at SLA.
To reinforce the sense of place, SLA emphasises the journey to and through the home. From the edge of the site, the landscape design creates a meandering path that leads to a gatehouse, where the formal entrance is revealed along with sections of the ocean to the left and courtyards to the right. The courtyards offer quiet, sheltered spaces to relax and enable natural light to be showcased inside a home that disappears into nature. “The arrival sequence of the house is a really important one: as you move down, you come into a lobby space that's really characterised by a sequence of staircases that defines the northern side of the house and connects all of the various levels,” says Ford.
Inside a home that disappears into nature, all spaces contain a view of the outdoors. The lower level of Whale Beach contains the children’s bedrooms and games room, while the level above houses the main living spaces. Connected to the lounge is a north-east-facing terrace with a swimming pool. On the top level, the parents’ suite features a bathroom that opens to a central courtyard, enabling an indoor-outdoor bathing experience. Light-coloured details throughout the home strengthen the connection to the coast.
Nestled in the landscape, Whale Beach testifies to SLA’s ongoing mission to create meaningful architecture. While the fitting complexity of the project does not impact its essence as a warm coastal home, it draws clients and architects together in a way that cements its success.
