Set at the foot of Mt. Banahaw in Nagcarlan, Laguna is landscape artist and painter Ponce Veridiano's home and gallery he calls the Tauhai Villa. The home is built on a steep terrain by a stream, surrounded by foliage. Veridiano was inspired by architects Tadao Ando and Frank Lloyd Wright when building this structure. Veridiano allows plants to be wild - trees cling on to the stone walls, the aerial roots of the Monstera plants crawl over the walls, vines dangle above windows.

The home also functions as Studio 88, a gallery that exhibits Veridiano's works of art. Only starting during the pandemic, Veridiano's early pieces were charcoal drawings of still life and now have evolved to colorful splashes of abstract paintings.

You may have seen the walk through video of this Westport 164 a few weeks ago, when I filmed a visit to the yacht during the Fort Lauderdale Boats Show with the Chief Engineer.

After that we were able to film her in the beautiful Exumas and get the brokers comments on this fantastic yacht.

A dream home built off the coast of Aotearoa’s (New Zealand) mainland, on the northern edge of Waiheke Island, Boatshed Bay by Patterson Associates is a private beach house nestled on a sprawling 4.5-hectare site.

Named after the bay the house is perched upon, the dwelling is a dream home built around a series of self-contained volumes, designed to embrace seaward vistas. “I think it’s really important to design a beach house that’s on the water, from the water, because that’s the prettiest view and that's the view people remember,” notes Andrew Patterson, director at Patterson Associates. Working alongside project lead Richard Andrews and builder Kevin Glamuzina, the team were able to conceive a robust home intrinsically linked to its location.

Referring to the gradual expansion of the typical New Zealand beach house, Patterson revelled in the fact that the family decided to demolish the original house and create a dream home built from scratch, meaning the architecture was able to be designed as a whole. “For us, it was the simplicity and the relationship and the unity between the concept and the detail of it that really was going to make the house sing,” says Patterson.

The architecture of Boatshed Bay is equally about the outdoor spaces as well as the interior design. “This part of New Zealand is a very temperate, almost subtropical environment,” says Patterson. Spread around a central pool, two volumes outline a U-shaped floor plan, while a smaller cottage was also relocated onsite and refurbished for visitor accommodation. “The courtyard forms the main circulation of the house,” notes Patterson, “There are no corridors or lobbies in this house … all of the rooms naturally open out into the courtyard.” This architecture allows the home to feel casual and informal, creating opportunities for people to bump into one another while wandering between inside and out.

The team constructed a dream home built with a few main materials – grey sea-aged timber, in-situ concrete, and brass and bronze. Robust materials are favoured for the facade and interior design, the building sitting atop a concrete raft and framed by a steel-and-timber roof. “Cedar used on the project was from Rosenfeld Kidson, who we worked with to deliver a beautiful cladding solution that consists of a custom vertical batten, so we ended up with a seamless solution with no visible fixings,” says Andrews. Natural stone also features throughout the interior design, complemented by a copper standing seam roof and brass hardware in the bathrooms and kitchen.

For Patterson, his favourite part of a dream home built on Waiheke Island is in the detail, “which is so rigorous for such a casual house.” For Andrews, “it’s the beautiful ribbon roof, which looks like it’s floating over the glass.” He adds; “Having the opportunity to revisit Boatshed Bay after five years, the house sits beautifully in the landscape, the materials have weathered, and the house sits beautifully within the environment.”

Set off on my 1967 generator shovelhead to meet Aaron in the Cotswolds. He was riding his 70s shovelhead, and we kicked things off by visiting Jeremy Clarkson’s brewery before checking out a little village called Burton-on-the-Water. Proper scenic spot.

After that, we found a nearby campsite to crack a few beers and build a fire to keep warm. Night didn’t go so smooth for Aaron, though—his blow-up bed wouldn’t hold air. My fancy one from Kilos? No issues at all.

Next morning, we raided the campsite fridge for some leftover breakfast from previous guests and hit the road to Wales to meet Adam on his 1982 FXR shovelhead.

We aimed for this fancy campsite with a great view in Penmaen, but of course, we’d booked the tent pitches all wrong and only had space for one. Only option? Upgrade to glamping for the final night.

Once we found the campsite, we decided to head to a town about 20 minutes away for a few drinks and to find a good spot to hang out. On the way, my headlight decided to give up. A few roadside attempts didn’t sort it, but we managed to get it sorted at a garage before riding back to camp. Once back at camp, it was all about fires, beers, and enjoying the clear night sky.

The next day, I set off early to hit the road back home. But along the way, my oil cap rattled loose, and the horseshoe tank spat oil everywhere, causing the bike to cut out on the motorway. After scarring my head trying to figure it out, I spotted a Shell garage in the distance across a farmer’s field. Feeling like I was in a game of Frogger, I made it to the garage and grabbed whatever oil I could find to fire the bike back up.

It didn’t take long, though, for things to go sideways again. The cheap oil I’d bought was pouring out of a bottom-end gasket that had a small split I’d been putting off fixing for too long. The oil covered my back wheel, making the bike slip a little, and I knew I had to call it a day. Ended up calling recovery and retreating from the ride.

I’ve only known Aaron for just over a year, and this was only the second time meeting Adam (we met at a chopper show this summer), but I can honestly say these guys are solid—true friends for life.

Once a year we gather up all our Creators and bring ‘em to an undisclosed location somewhere off the grid for a week of collaboration, innovation, art, music, and of course, plenty of surfing.

This year was no different, save for getting our hands on a few of Miki Dora’s personal boards. The two logs served as the catalyst for shaping inspiration, after all, we were camped in the hills surrounding his home break: First Point.

What transpired over the week was raw, creative freedom amongst a group of friends that are very rarely all in the same zip code, let alone the same shaping bay and makeshift laminating tent.

Along the coastline of Auckland, at the base of a mountain slope, this home is a love letter to nature. Kawakawa House interweaves with the natural beauty of its surroundings. Designed by Herbst Architects, this dwelling serves as an ode to the Tasman Sea below and the pōhutukawa trees that surround it.

Kawakawa House emerges as an homage to its natural heritage, and the architect’s response to the environment is both sensitive and masterful. The home’s inspiration is a landscape characterised by raw splendour. “It’s all about the trees,” says Lance Herbst, principal at Herbst Architects. The site’s dense forest of pōhutukawa, revered as national treasures, sets the tone for the design.

This home is a love letter to nature, and a sense of immersion defines every aspect of the abode. Low windows offer glimpses of the green forest floor, while elevated living spaces offer views of both the sea and canopy above. “What we did was create a clerestory all the way around the building, and what that’s really doing is lifting your eye as you move through so that you can observe this canopy of pōhutukawa all the time,” says Herbst.

The material palette reinforces the dwelling’s connection to its environment – from spotted gum flooring to black steel joinery to sculptural features that add aesthetic appeal and structural support. Dark-stained timber, chosen to mimic the bark of the trees, integrates Kawakawa House into its setting. Birch plywood evokes the gradient tones of freshly cut wood, adding warmth and texture to the interior.

Kawakawa House offers simplicity and functionality without compromising on comfort. The upper level, housing the main living space and bedrooms, is a simple rectangle, construed as a balustraded, covered deck with an integrated open courtyard – a focal point around which the architectural plan revolves. This home is a love letter to nature, with the design facilitating flow from the living space to the courtyard, maintaining a sense of openness and connection to the outdoors while bringing light into the home. The courtyard also serves as a protected outdoor living area when the wind blows in from the west. “What you’re able to do is retreat into that space, uncovered,” says Herbst. “The courtyard is editing out all the wind.”

Herbst notes the evolution from the firm’s previous work, Under Pōhutukawa – an almost identical site to Kawakawa House. “This home is the second iteration,” he says, “and there were positive lessons learned from the first one.” While this home is a love letter to nature, it shares the same site conditions and represents a more distinct architectural response, showcasing a refined approach that maintains the spirit of the original but in a more controlled manner.

This home is a love letter to nature and a testament to the enduring relationship between humanity and nature. By embracing the beauty of the Auckland coast, Herbst Architects has created a sanctuary where design and landscape coalesce – a place where the spirit of the home lives on, forever intertwined with the pōhutukawa forest that envelopes it.

If Australia is one of surfing’s greatest nations then Sydney might just be the world’s greatest surfing city. With four-million people sharing the world’s largest natural harbour and 50-miles of coastline, blessed with incredible waves year round, Sydney is a modern metropolis on the water, with a storied, gritty surfing underbelly.

From Isabel Letham famously riding waves with Hawaiian Duke Kahanamoku at Freshwater Beach in 1915 through to a string of world champions including Tom Carroll, Mark Occhilupo and Layne Beachley, and on down the line to modern stars like Molly Picklum and Jarvis Earle, Sydney’s competitive bloodline runs deep. While the greater surfing community might know and toast the world champions, it is the hardcore local boardrider scene that is the DNA everything is built upon, and from Maroubra to Avoca and Newport to Bondi, host Ashton Goggans meets a cross-section of crusty locals, and explores the world class waves they live and breathe.

On the back of radical surfing Sydney was not only responsible for the surfboard revolutions of the Brookvale Six and the invention of Simon Anderson’s thruster, but spawned an irreverent and sardonic multi-million surf industry of its own. If that’s not enough, the good old Aussie cafe, complete with avocado toast, washed down with a flat white, has become a global phenomenon, and they were largely born of the beaches too.

RDJ House is nestled on a descending slope within a forest reserve, blending with the surrounding topography. Designed to appear as a single-story structure at first glance, the house gradually reveals two levels. The ground floor features open social spaces with travertine floors, natural wood, and large glass panels that blur the boundary between indoors and the surrounding nature. A floating swimming pool connects to the garden, while the upper-level bedrooms offer panoramic views. Below, the basement hosts entertainment and utility spaces, with stone and small window facades contrasting the airy upper floor. Today, AD joins architect Masato Igarashi of IGArchitects to see how he makes the most of his small Tokyo home. Tokyo has the highest population concentration in all of Japan, so large plots of land have been divided into two or three across the city, making tiny living the reality for many residents. While his home is technically only two floors, Igarashi fits an impressive seven staggered levels into the home with no walls, creating an open space where the seventh floor feels like the same room as the first.

Betsy and Edward Cohen have had a 40+ year love affair with their Paul Rudolph home located in the picturesque Casey Key area of Florida. Renowned for his innovative designs that shaped mid-century modern architecture, Rudolph’s work on Casey Key exemplifies his mastery of form, space, and light. This iconic structure reflects his commitment to blending architecture with the natural landscape, creating a harmonious and timeless design that continues to inspire architects and admirers alike. As Betsy and Edward’s children grew and started families of their own, they came to the realization that their once-cozy home no longer accommodated the expanding needs of their family. That's when they decided to build the ultimate place for all their families to gather while enjoying the coastal weather that Florida has to offer.

In addition to Rudolph’s work, the Casey Key estate also features two remarkable houses designed by Toshiko Mori. Known for her contemporary approach and sensitivity to context, Mori's additions complement Rudolph’s original vision while bringing a fresh perspective to the architectural landscape. Together, these works highlight the evolution of modern architecture in Florida, bridging past and present through thoughtful design. The effort that Betsy and Edward have done to protect/preserve the Rudolph home while adjusting to fit their families needs says alot about the love affair that started for them when they purchased the home in 1981.
